The War Production Board Order U-9 known as the Brown Out restricts non essential electricity use. Clare post office hours shift to 5:30 weekdays and 5:00 Saturdays. Local guidance outlines prohibited uses and penalties for violations.
Farm planning for 1945 will be discussed by Arthur Haist of Michigan State College at two meetings. The talks will be at Arthur Town Hall at 2:00 p.m. and Colonville School at 8:00 p.m. The sessions aim to guide farmers amid wartime uncertainty.
Notice from Veta B. Peterson City Treasurer reminding dog owners to obtain county licenses before March 1 and that all dogs four months old or older must be licensed after June 1 with fees for each sex.
Harold B. Hughes, longtime Detroit attorney and Clare county resident, will open a law office over The Citizens State Bank of Clare shortly after February 15. He studied at Harrison High School and Central Michigan College of Education, earned a Bachelor of Law in 1939, and taught in Detroit before practicing in Clare. He is married to Vivian Baughman and has a four year old son David, and he aims to practice law among familiar neighbors.
The Congregational Church hosts its Annual Father and Son Banquet in the church parlors on Wednesday February 1 at 6 30 p m. Clifton A Youngman of Lakeview Michigan will speak on Around Our Town from his verse book. The Ladies Guild serves the dinner and Harold Fleming is ticket chairman with a cap of 150 tickets.
Pfc Romains L Williams, son of Augustus F Williams of Clare, reported missing in action in Europe on February 9. Born in Grant township and a Clare High School alumnus, he married Madeline Stirling in April 1948. He enlisted January 6, 1943, training at Camp Robinson, Fort Meade, and Camp McCoy before deployment in April 1944.

Mrs Minnie Bishop died suddenly at her Flint apartment on Tuesday February 13 1945 aged 68 years 2 months and 13 days. She came to Clare in 1885 with the Bader family and later married George Bishop in 1905. Funeral services were held at Groves Funeral Home Kint and interment in Cherry Grove Cemetery beside her mother and brother.
The Clare Pioneers basketball team improved to six wins and six losses after defeating Coleman 28 17 and Beaverton 24 14. Beaverton had previously knocked Clare out of last year’s District tournament. Clare led Coleman 20 1 mid first half and eased to a 19 17 loss, but beat Beaverton with better second half shooting. Two games remain at Shepherd on February 20 and Gladwin February 23. The Clare Junior High teams also beat Harrison, with seventh graders 18 10 and eighth graders 23 12.
Rev Chas Kleinhardt, recently ill, will return to duties next Sunday at Arthur Center Church for an 11 30 morning service and at Colonyville Church for an 8 00 evening service after a youth led song service. A good attendance is requested.
The Nation Will Pause in Prayer This Afternoon centers on World Day of Prayer observed by over 10,000 communities. The local program, sponsored by the Ministerial Association and United Council of Church Women, runs 2:45 to 3:45 PM at the Baptist Church with songs, solos by Mrs. Bessie Seiter, prayers led by church leaders, meditations by Rev. Fred Belleville and Rev. Chas. B. Hahn, and benediction.
The Ideal Theatre screens Fighting Lady as part of a double feature, among the first in the nation to show the film which portrays life aboard a Pacific aircraft carrier. Ernie Pyle praises the Navy produced technicolor piece shot on location with authentic combat scenes and planes. The film's popularity prompted efforts to bring it back to the Ideal.
In cooperation with the Brown Out, only one Clare drug store will stay open Sunday evenings through February, March, and April. All drug stores operate 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Sundays, then close 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and one store will reopen 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. each Sunday evening, rotating through April. Cards in stores indicate which location is open that week.
Mrs Amanda OConnor died February 8 at Central Michigan Community Hospital Mt Pleasant after months of illness from a broken hip. Born August 10 1856 in Tuscola County she married James OConnor June 30 1872. They founded a Vernon Township pioneer home later donating land for a school later renamed OConner school. Their son Charles born 1873 died young.
The Walter H. Larman Post hosts the Tenth District Legion Convention at city hall memorial building with district officers presiding. Banquet follows in IC0F hall served by Rebekahs and Theta Rho Girls. Entertainment includes solos, tap dances, shadow pictures, and a speech by Dr. Merle S. Ward on Which Way Is America.
The Father and Son Banquet of the Methodist Church will be served Wednesday evening February 28. Due to rationing, ticket sales should close Monday February 26.
Mr and Mrs George J White received a telegram from the War Department Feb 9 informing them their son 2nd Lieut John G White had been reported missing in action in Luxembourg since Jan 26 He volunteered from the community in 1940 and was commissioned in the Coast Artillery Corps in 1948 later transferring to the Infantry and went overseas in 1944
Friends learn of the death of Mrs Maggie McKinley Calkins in Hastings after a February 4 hospital admission. Funeral services were held February 12 with burial at Irving Cemetery. A Sheridan township resident and sister of the late Marie McKinley Younglove, she was married to Mr Calkins, who preceded her. She leaves nieces nephews stepchildren and many friends.
The sacred oratorio The Holy City by A. R. Gaul returns Palm Sunday evening March 25 at Clare Methodist Church. Doris Gerow directs and Harold Collins plays organ. Rehearsals are Sundays 3:00 to 4:00 PM. Community members invited to join the chorus.

Pvt Jim Allen of Farwell Michigan fired the first American shell into Germany from a 15 mm gun near the German front. The gun crew included Sgt Robert Hayton of Los Angeles and New Yorkers Pvt Tom Sabato and Pvt Marlo Rommero. Allen downplayed the moment, calling it just another shell in the long war.
The annual meeting at Hastings on January 17 re-elected five directors and officers. It notes year end 1944 insurance in force at 532,358,088.08 and a net gain of 12,52,938.00. Losses paid 256,383.34. Armistice Day 1946 windstorm cost 1,250,000. The company remained financially strong with no borrowing.
