Clare County Boy Scout Rally Draws Large Crowd

About two hundred people attended the Clare County Boy Scout pot luck dinner and rally on February 15. Clare and Harrison troops were represented. Farwell Troop absent due to a missing Scoutmaster. Eagle Scout Tony Burdo chaired the program, awards were presented to multiple Scouts, and Life and Eagle ranks were highlighted along with certificates of appreciation.

Clare county 4-H clubs plan National 4-H Club Week activities March 3 to 11 with special meetings and self evaluation. Edith Allen’s Three Sons in Military Service

Mrs Edith Allen hosted a family dinner on February 18 honoring son Myron who departed for military service. Twins Melvin in the Air Corps at Fort Myers Florida expects furlough February 20 to meet Myron at Fort Sheridan on Thursday. Eldest son Dewey enlisted in June 1941 and has served in Europe for about a year.

Congregational Father and Son Banquet Success

The Congregational Church held its annual Father and Son Banquet on a Wednesday evening February 21. Rev. Harold Watson gave the invocation, with dinner by the Ladies Guild and patriotic table décor. Clifton A. Youngman spoke on Around our Town, highlighting father and son ties, as 140 fathers and sons attended despite bad weather.

Flag Dedication at Congregational Church

The Congregational Church will host a Sunday flag dedication during morning worship. The Pilgrim Youth Fellowship funds and presents a Christian and an American flag to be showcased in the sanctuary. Rev. Harold Watson will preach on Serving Under Two Flags as Douglas Fleming and Herbert Smith present the flags.

Mrs. E. Sprague Dies in Bay City Hospital

Edith Mary Allen Sprague dies in Bay City Michigan on February 17 1945 aged 32. Born October 9 1912 in Clare County Michigan she was married to Ernest Sprague November 21 1931 and leaves daughter Phyllis Ann, parents Eugene and Annie Allen, relatives in Alma and Clare, and funeral services were held at Clare Methodist Church with interment at Cherry Grove cemetery.

Clare Pioneers Reach 500 Mark With Shepherd Win

The Clare Pioneers improved to over five hundred with a 27 24 victory over Shepherd last Tuesday. Scores show 6 3 after one and 14 11 at half, before Clare pulled ahead 21 13 after intermission. The close final minutes saw Shepherd rally, but Clare’s balanced scoring from Chaffee Cappaert Hartshorn and Rodabaugh plus Foss defense kept them competitive as they prepare to face Gladwin in a key season finale.

Christmas Box Sent to Belgium Returns Home

A Christmas package sent by Rev. and Mrs. Chas. Kleinhardt to Tech. Sgt. Royal Kleinhardt in Belgium last October was returned Tuesday. Royal has since been discharged to convalesce at Percy Jones Hospital in Battle Creek. The box followed him to Belgium and back. His brother Pvt. Robert Kleinhardt is convalescing in a hospital in France after action in Germany.

Olin Dies After Heart Attack at Clare

Jerry Jack Olin guest at the Doherty Hotel for a month died at 4 30 am Wednesday from a heart attack after two years of ill health. He lived on West Seventh Street and worked as a pumper and warehouse foreman for Garfield Petroleum in Gladwin before moving back to Clare. He left no known relatives and his death was ruled natural by Coroner Dr G B Lamb. Funeral services set for Friday at St Cecilia's Church after prayers at 9 30 am at the Doherty Funeral Home with Rev Fr Chas D Brophy presiding. Interment in St Cecilia's Cemetery.

Private Edison Pelcher Reported Killed in Action

Mr and Mrs Peter Pelcher of Vet Bon township received a telegram from the War Department stating the Secretary of War offers sympathy on the loss of their son, Private Edison Pelcher. He was previously listed as missing in action and is now confirmed dead on Luzon January 14. Adjutant General confirms.

Mr and Mrs Glen Powell of Faxwell announce a War Department telegram confirming Pvt Gerald Cotterman their brother in law is a prisoner of war in Germany after being reported missing since December 18.

Sleet Storm on Anniversary of 1922 Damage

The sleet storm tied Michigan for a day and a half echoing the 1922 event with damage to buildings shade and fruit trees. Roads were dangerous and rail service slowed while phone and power lines failed briefly. One injury accident occurred near Clare as Dorita Grewe lost control. four others were hurt lightly but recovered in Clare Hospital after x rays. State Police investigated.

Hrvin Mizer lifelong Dover area resident died Sunday at his daughter Mrs. St. Clair Hamlin's home in South Lyons. Funeral services were held at Dover Tabernacle Thursday with Chas Kleinhardt officiating and interment in Cherry Grove Cemetery beside his wife. The life story will be published next week.

Arthur Pioneer Called To Her Reward

Sarah Angeline Shilt of Dark County Ohio born January 22 1869 died February 11 1945 at her son Earl Sanders home in Arthur Township Clare County Michigan aged 76 years 18 days. Married 1877 to Frances M Sanders parents of Hart and Delbert they moved from Paulding Ohio to Michigan in 1900. Husband died January 22 1939. Survived by sons Harl and Delbert six granddaughters one grandson ten great grandchildren one half brother Elza Shilt Massillon Ohio and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held February 14 at Arthur town hall with Rev Charles Kleinhardt. interment Arthur Township Cemetery.
