Veterans of Foreign Wars establish Pettit Kapplinger Post No 5738 in Clare with eighty four pledges taking oath. Officers installed include Anderson as Commander and Manee as Senior Vice Commander along with a full slate. charter roster lists 114 names. A service officer and regional field rep will aid veterans in pension claims and welfare matters.

Injured Man Hurt Teardown Near Lake

John Haring 49 of Clare suffered a crushed thigh and compound knee fracture when a timber fell while he and his son in law Carl Lloyd tore down a house near Lake. He was treated at Clare and later at Dearborn Veterans Hospital. Doctors weigh amputation risk. Haring worked for Marbie Auto Collision Service.

Haveman to Return to Private Practice Today

Dr. Marvin J. Haveman and Mrs. Haveman leave Clare for Grant Michigan where he resumes private dentistry after a year with public health work. He arrived January last year as Tri-County Health Unit dentist and has lived in Clare since June. The Tri-County post will stay vacant until a new dentist is appointed by the Children’s Fund of Michigan in six to eight weeks.

Pioneers Sweep Week With Varsity and Junior Varsity Wins

Clare High’s Pioneers drilled Coleman 46 24 last Friday as Rodabaugh and Cappaert led scoring with 11 and 12 points. Newman and Joslin added 19 each. Tuesday they overwhelmed Shepherd 46 27 with four players in double figures and strong defense. Junior Varsity won 34 17 and 20 13 respectively. Next Friday they visit Gladwin to finish the season 9 5 and seek another win.

Davis Speaks at Rotary Meeting Wednesday Noon

Rotary Club members gathered with guests James Richardson Bernard Wyman Frank LaGoe and visiting Rotarians Glen Oren and Ernest Morril of Mt. Pleasant. Frank Davis East Michigan Tourist Association spoke on tourism advertising plans including 375000 in state spending and magazine ads.

Midland Youth Milo Yager Killed in Train Collision

Milo Yager aged 20 of Midland died after his loaded sand truck crashed into an eastbound Pere Marquette freight train three miles east of Clare. The accident occurred Thursday at 3:30 pm. he died at Clare Hospital at 6:30 pm. Funeral services were held at Rosebush Methodist Church with interment in Riverside cemetery Mt. Pleasant. He was engaged to Miss Ethel Hoover.

Stough House Fire Destroys Clare Residence

The Dale Stough house four miles south and a half mile east of Clare burned Friday morning. Hy Mr and Mrs Flint Doan and their three children aged five seven and one were asleep when a child woke them to a light in another room. The attic fire could not be controlled. the garage was saved by Clare fire department. Loss about $3,000 with contents uninsured.

Isabella Mosher Pioneer Artist Dies at 99 in Rosebush Home

Isabella County’s notable pioneer and artist Mrs Cass Mosher died at her daughter’s home on February 9 at age 99. Born December 4, 1846 in Milford she taught at an Indian school and raised three children Julian Nelson and Cornelia. Her paintings and garden work were renowned and she contributed early Michigan history writings. Funeral held February 11 at Mrs Johnston’s home with Stinson and Son arranging and interment in Riverside cemetery Mt Pleasant.

Dr Sanford Honored With Gratitude Letters From Friends

Letters of congratulations from friends and former patients poured in for Dr F C Sanford at a testimonial dinner in Clare Michigan. The Canfield family of Detroit sent greetings praising fifty years of service and noting his impact on the Clare community and area farms. The message adds that he lacked a red wool undershirt and rubber cuffs but topped others in service.

Rev H Watson Accepts Call to Harrison Church

Rev Harold Watson, longtime pastor at Clare since 1943 and Harrison since 1944, accepts a full time call to Harrison effective Sunday February 17. He led youth work and local Pilgrim Youth Fellowship. church improvements included rostrum, floors, redecorating, new hymnals and flags. Sunday School at 10 and worship at 11 will begin at Harrison. Clare pulpit filled by Verne Stockman next Sunday at 10:30.

Edward Doup Dies at Traverse City Hospital

Edward Doup died Sunday at Traverse City Hospital after a stay that began in August 1945 at Clare Hospital. Born September 10, 1868 in Fletcher Ohio he was survived by a brother William Coup of St. Paris and a sister Jennie Snarf of Piqua. The body was taken to Metcher Ohio for funeral services and burial.

Word was received Thursday of the death of G C Liberabd a former Clare resident whose home had been in Bay City recently. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon from the Vallender Funeral Home at 608 North Madison Bay City.

Aaron Davis Passes Away at Daughter’s Vernon Home

Aaron Smith Davis born August 5 1874 in Licking County Ohio died February 5 1946 at his daughter’s home Vernon township Isabella county Michigan aged 71 years 6 months. He moved to Michigan as a youth worked as a lumberjack and married Clara Terry in 1903. Survived by four children Olive Roy Howard and Robert plus numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral February 8 at Strickland Baptist Church with burial in Union Cemetery Fremont township.

The Clare Kiwanis Club hosted a meeting at Hotel Doherty with Frank Davis of the East Michigan Tourist Association as guest speaker. A Clare County B M T A Council was formed after sessions, selecting Harold Fleming temporary chairman and Emil Buchols temporary secretary, with next meeting set for February 28 in Harrison.
