State Administrator Harry L. Pierson announced WPA workers guilty of shirk ing or misconduct will be discharged and not rehired by the Works Progress Administration or any government agency. Mrs Isom Shafer of Farwell died in Gaylord about noon Thursday after enduring extreme exposure while traveling to her ill mother’s home. Her husband, frozen foot, was treated at Gaylord hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday in Gaylord. she leaves a two year old daughter.

Coast guardsman dies saving fishermen in ice blizzard near Charlevoix
In a brutal three week blizzard coast guardsmen Harl Cunningham and Officer William Woods braved sub zero conditions to rescue five fishermen adrift on an ice floe. Cunningham and one fisherman died after Cunningham returned for the final pair. Woods suffered frostbite but survived. Cunningham was formerly a Clare boy, son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Cunningham. Beardsley and another crew member perished as rescue continued. The bodies were recovered as rescuers fought the ice packed floe to shore.
