A split between Governor Green and the State Conservation Commission surfaced at Friday’s meeting over selling oil leases on homesteaders lands. The governor urged delaying sales until the next legislature, citing protections for homesteaders and the 1909 law reserving mineral rights for public benefit.
Golf enthusiasts gathered at Hotel Doherty to celebrate a summer tournament at Houghton Heights. Losers hosted the four course dinner for winners, with Captain FE G Johnston as MC and Leo Hampton presiding. Speeches emphasized fair play, consistent rules, temper, honest scoring, and umpire necessity. Burnie Hampton presented a stolen putter to its owner, who exclaimed its weight. The putter is on display at Rexall store window.
Legal holiday observed on February 22. Banks will be closed including Clare County Savings Bank and Citizens State Bank. Local financial institutions advertise reduced hours or closures for the Washington's Birthday observance.
The McKay Mercier number 2 well in Grant township reached Marshallsand late Tuesday with a gas show and rising flow. By Wednesday morning the test measured 1,000,000 cubic feet per day as visitors watched the operation. Despite gas prospects, McKay and Mercier plan to focus on oil development at the site.
Last Sunday Rev C Binhammer was installed at St John’s Lutheran Church by Prof A Sauer of Saginaw. He will deliver his introductory sermon next Sunday February 16 in German and English at 9:45 and 10:45. An annual church meeting is set for February 23 at two o’clock with English communion services.
A village program is set for February 19 at 8:15 with Wilma Hochstetler soloing When My Ship Comes Sailing Home and Into the Dusk. Michigan Epworth League members support two workers in South America, Mr and Mrs Scott Hauser, who have written a study book Young People of South America to be used in Michigan chapters. Stereopticon slides are available at the Detroit Area Office and study books may be secured from District President Rev L M Whitnay in Gladwin.
Clare high defeated Midland high 49 to 23 in a decisive home game. Clare led from the start with strong free throws and steady passing while Midland struggled at the foul line converting only four. Clare faces Bir yat tonight and Mt Pleasant's United States Indian School next Tuesday in local gym contests.
A Dairy Department and Michigan State College demonstration shows simple, affordable clean milk practices for Clare and Isabella counties. The event, at the Detroit Creamery plant in Clare, explains how producers can raise milk quality without costly equipment. P D Gibson notes the session aims to boost per capita consumption through education and sanitation.
Clare high school basketball will compete in the district tournament at Mt. Pleasant High Gym March 6 7 and 8 under Principal L C Wendt. Eligible Class C teams include Beaverton Shepherd Gladwin Coleman with Class B Mt Pleasant Midland Caro and Mt Pleasant Indian School. Class D entrants may be Remus Blanchard Weidman Harrison Farwell and Sacred Heart Academy Mt Pleasant. Schedule not yet drawn but games expected at the high school gym.
Epworth League opens at 6 30 Sunday evening with a hymn contest. Members should arrive on time and be ready to name a favorite hymn and share details on its composition. Leaders Mildred Stirling and Betty Doherty guide the lively program.
Interest in Scouting in Clare grew Tuesday evening with a rally and installation to mark the 20th anniversary of the Boy Scout organization in America. B N Mercar chaired the committee, T Carl Holbrook spoke on community impact, and Evan Price led the installation with about thirty scouts receiving certificates.
Coral Collins, treasurer, announces availability at The Clare County Savings Bank on the last week of February to receive taxes. This is described as the final opportunity to pay taxes.
Four meetings in Clare county will cover new seed strains, certification, and variety test results. George Wenner of Michigan State College will explain merits of seed varieties and high quality seed for efficient farming. Meetings are Tuesday February 18 at Grant Town Hall and Elm Grove Grange Hall, and Wednesday at Hamilton Town Hall and Greenwood Town Hall.
On March 6 at the Clare Auditorium the Clare Study Club presents H. M. S. Pinafore an opera by Gilbert and Sullivan from 1879 satirizing the British Navy. Proceeds will benefit the City Library and Clare Study Club with full details to come next week.
A Wednesday night gathering at Mrs. Pearl Sanford's home featured a bountiful chicken dinner for banqueters and praise for hostess Mrs. Hileen Bogan and committee. Readings by Beatrice Secor and musical numbers by Neenah Cregier Nelda Wailihan Reagan Garns and others followed. Officers elected included Mesdames Elden Holden president and vice president, secretary Maude Callihan, treasurer Doris Gerow. The club praised cooperation and announced Musical Day on February 24 at Mrs. Minnie Caul’s home.
Clare Merchants defeat Charlevoix Bears 32 to 20 after two overtimes in the high school gym. Hearns scores the winner as the north country visitors see their 13 game win streak end. Merchants: Curtice Hearns Leo Hampton Leo Joslin H B Johnson Wallace Johnson.
In a 1920 all talking Super Special Gary Cooper and Mary Brian star in a romance of pioneer life. Richard Barthelmus and Marion Nixon perform in a concurrent all talking comedy at the Princes Theatre with shows on Sunday and Monday.
A short notice from Ara Richmond urges customers to place orders early as another car of coal will be received next Saturday.
Keeler-Mitchell No. 1 at Broomfield township, Mt Pleasant field, first flowed 2.5 million cu ft daily last Saturday, then surged to about 11 million cu ft as bradenhead was set. Drillers estimate gas sand at 1829 feet with 8 feet into gas way sand. Dow Chemical noted gas at nearby Murphy farm. The field braces for further drilling and possible Dundee development.
Clare resident Dee Carrier died Sunday evening at St Marys Hospital in Saginaw at age 58 years four months and twenty seven days after an eight week illness. He married Susie Goodspeed in 1893 and they had three children two daughters Dorothy and Gécil who died young and a son Rex of this city. They moved to Clare County twenty eight years ago settling near Colonville and had been residents of Clare for fourteen years. Funeral was held in Marcellay Michigan Tuesday with Rev L Beebe officiating.
