Plan for New Michigan Capitol Sparks Larger Battle
Legislators debate a $50 million plan to replace the 1878 Capitol with a seven level four block complex. The design by Smith Hinchman and Grylls Associates features a troika of legislative judicial and executive buildings atop an all purpose center, a 185 foot tower, massive stairs and updated systems. Opposition from preservationists and Sen. Thomas L. Brown centers on cost and the fate of the existing 91 year old Capitol while officials warn the current building is deteriorating with condemned sections and unsafe wiring.
