Former Clare Resident Dies in Wisconsin
Eli Cross born November 8 1850 in Ionia Michigan died January 28 1928 at his Ashland Wisconsin home 10138 Fourth Avenue West. He married Mary Farrell on December 4 1870 and had five children two sons Joseph and Dennis and two daughters Mrs John J Fel ler and Mrs Rufus D Sceoon and ten grandchildren. He lived in Clare County Michigan as a pioneer farmer before moving to Ashland in 1905 and was a Congregational church member in Dover Michigan and a K O T M lodge member in Clare. Funeral services were held January 31 at 1 30 p m from the Congregational church with Rev Walter M Bilis officiating. Interment Mount Hope cemetery.

Clare endured an ice storm Tuesday recalling the February 1922 disaster. Rain and freezing temperatures produced a slick, glare ice that slowed pedestrians and delayed traffic but caused no serious injuries as McEwan street became a skating rink until temperatures rose.

Two Local Boy Scouts Awarded Merit Badges In Court
At a Court of Honor meeting two local Boy Scouts were awarded merit badges after demonstrating knowledge in various subjects. Dorsey Mussell earned badges in first aid swimming scholarship leathercraft and wood carving. Byron Gallagher received badges in scholarship and firemanship. Mussell’s latest award makes him eligible to apply for a four month Africa trip sponsored by George Palmer Putman and son, with Scouts chosen from across the United States.

He moved to Clare 34 years ago worked as electrician for A J Doherty then to Mt Pleasant after Clare plant sale. Giant toboggan slide opens at Budd Lake
The Green Mountain Tree Company of Harrison completed a 300 foot long toboggan slide with a 100 foot elevation at Budd Lake. A six cornered log cabin tops the hill with the slide running past three smaller cabins to the lake bank. The eight person sled uses a self starter and windless to ascend. A mammoth iceberg feature was built at the south of the slide.

Hatton Resident Fred Maxwell Dies at 44
Friends and relatives in Hatton township mourn the death of Fred Maxwell age 44 who passed away in his sleep after a recent illness. He lived with his brother and had been ill with a feverish condition but death was unexpected. Funeral services were held at his sister Mina Weasle’s home in Vernon township officiated by Rev. W. W. Hurd, with interment at Loomis cemetery.
