Week at the state Capitol focused on finances and Michigan crime code changes. Gov Green proposed amending habitual criminal penalties to avoid life terms for Haquerlas violations, setting seven to fifteen year ranges based on first offense penalties.
Dennis He. Alward secretary of the Republican state central committee will not run again. His successor will be chosen at the spring convention. A prominent Michigan Republican Alward has long served as secretary and once lost the post before being reinstated. Frank Fitzgerald Eaton Rapids is favored as a replacement with strong ties to state government.
Funeral services were held for Flora Turner at the home of Wm. Barlow with Rev. Chas. Kleinhart presiding. Born March 31, 1869 in Green County Ohio, she moved to Logan County at age ten, married H. F. Turner in 1891, and moved to Clare County in 1907 settling in Greenwood township. She died Saturday January 26 after a short illness, survived by her husband a granddaughter Evelyn Barlow a mother one brother and two sisters Ada Lilliard and Ellen Babcock.
Invitation to dance at Mt. Vernon Grange Hall tonight on Friday February Sth promises good time for attendees and guests.
A Tri-County Maccabees association met at the I C O F hall in Alma for an all day session last Friday. Alma ladies served a noon dinner and the tables featured George Washington birthday decor with Jerusalem cherry trees. Clare residents Mesdames John Doherty Oise Derby Eugene Pettit and John Wilson attended. Lady Francis B Burns from Detroit spoke on the orders work and the opening of a new home for aged Maccabee ladies set for Lilac Time in May with visitors from across the United States and Canada. The group purchased the home of Mrs Francis King, naming it Orchard House.
The Clare Library Association marked its five year milestone with a meeting at the Hotel Doherty attended by the mayor city council and Chamber of Commerce directors. Proposals noted include ongoing support from the council and gratitude to A J Doherty for providing library space.
The Princess Theatre runs February 9 through 15 featuring Rin Tin Tin in a swift desert adventure and a dramatic film The Man Who Laughs with Conrad Veidt and Mary Philbin. Matinees Tuesday at 3:45 priced 20c 10c and evenings 30c 10c. Also advertised are Bebe Daniels in a musical chorus piece and Harry Lauder in Hunting Tower with a coming Wedding March and Matinee Call.
The tenth district convention of the American Legion will be held in Clare on Sunday February 24 with Walter A. Larman post No 128 hosting. At least 150 delegates are expected for the event. The banquet is at two pm with T Carl Holbrook as toastmaster and Senator Augustus Ganasser of Bay City to deliver the principal address.
The Con gregational church held its annual meeting after a pot luck supper, with strong reports showing growth. H C Cudney reelected to the Board of Trustees, M D Feighner elected to fill vacancy, and Elden and Elden re elected as Deacons.
A meeting of interest to Clare and Isabella county farmers will be held in the high school auditorium next Friday February 15 at 2 30 pm. A crop improvement specialist from the State College will discuss seed problems certified seed and the Michigan Crop Improvement Association and varieties adapted to northern Michigan.
Miss Gerow leads the devotional meeting next Sunday evening inviting all to attend. Each person brought counts as one point for the attendee’s group as the contest nears its close. Group three leads, while others must work to win.

Clare Study Club members and high school attendees heard O J Greeg from Michigan State College discuss the Home Beautiful theme. He told of John and Mary restoring a ramshackle house and landscaping the grounds while urging happiness now rather than later. Mrs Bogan chaired, and Neenah Crigier with Helen Lucile Bicknell played violin preludes.
The Kings Daughters met with Mrs. Wilson on January 31 to elect officers for the year. Officers named were President Mrs. Myrtle Wilson, Vice-president Mrs. Kate Knapp, Secretary Mrs. Susan Foell, Assistant Secretary Mrs. Minnie Brown, Treasurer Mrs. Lillian Osborn, and Work Committee Mrs. Neithercut and Mrs. Brown. A rising vote of thanks was given to retiring president Mrs. Loomis. The postponed supper will be held Thursday February 14 at the church with a short patriotic program.
Advance Grange at Him Grove hosts a Valentine box social on Thursday evening February 14. Prizes will be awarded for the prettiest box. Ladies bring a box and gents the wash. Everyone is welcome.

The U I S hosts a Valentine dancing party Thursday evening February 14 at Duncan hall. All Masons Stars and friends invited. Dancing from 9 to 11 oclock. Admission one dollar per couple with an extra lady fifty cents.
Larman Post of the American Legion will sponsor a benefit dance at Doherty Auditorium on Friday evening February 22. All proceeds go to Clare high school band uniform fund. A. J. Doherty donated the auditorium and George Boyd will lead the high school band orchestra free of charge. The Legion aims to cover a deficit of over one hundred dollars with ticket sales and community support is urged.
The January meeting of the Central Michigan Funeral Directors Association was held in Clare with members from Coleman Midland West Branch Alma Shepherd Mt Pleasant and Clare. Dinner was at Joslin restaurant then at Thurston Funeral Home the program and business meeting were led by Elmer Sternaul West Branch president. Rev H G Johnson gave an address followed by a Beverhal discussion on the business. A social hour and refreshments closed the gathering. The association meets monthly. A H Bradley of Midland is secretary.
The Michigan highway department in Lansing will distribute 1,000,000 in state reward money to counties this week with another 1,000,000 due April 1 and 165,715 on February 1, 1930. Isabella receives 19,764.73, Gratiot 7,605.59, Clare 6,515.02, Midland 9,971.63, Mecosta 5,939.63, Montcalm 8,246.35.
The Clare Study Club plans to establish an Educational Loan Fund to aid high school students in need. They have previously assisted worthy students and now aim to keep funds ready for future needs. Mrs. Willard Bicknell coaches a merit play titled Thank You, staged February 26, with promises of value for patrons and a plot outline to be printed next week in The Sentinel.

Reed City high reserves edged Clare high 15 to 11 in a tight game at Reed City Friday night. Clare started with quick scoring but Reed City surged in the third period, taking a small lead before Clare closed with two late free throws.
The Maccabees elected new officers led by Commander Hattie Wilson with Maggie Derby as Past Commander and Linnie Pettit as Lieutenant Commander. Janet Branch from St. Louis acted as Supreme installing officer. Lady Wilson hosted a Valentine lunch and a March 6 meeting date was set at Lady Doherty’s home.

Dohery Jr Clare T Garl Holbrook Clare Wm Murphy Harrison as delegates to the state convention to be held in Lansing on February 20 1929 A resolution expressing regret at the resignation of Hon Dennis H Alward from the State Central Committee was passed unanimously.
