The Clare Study Club met January 24 with Mrs. John Wilson hosting. Mrs. Anita Tichenor chaired a program by Mr. Kitchin on China’s history, religion, and modernization. He illustrated with maps and discussed Confucianism, famine logistics, gunpowder, printing, and railway and road reach in ancient and modern China. Continued on Page Five.

Kileer of Coleman Deputy Sentenced in Marquette Prison
John Chester Renner of Cheboygan slain Deputy Sheriff Harl Martin at Coleman on January 8. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in Marquette by Judge Ray Hart after his arrest in Cheboygan. Renner suffered injuries to left hand and arm. he allegedly boasted of police pursuit and confessed to robbery after capture.

Lewis Brown of Mann Siding Dies After Ill Health
Lewis Brown of the Mann Siding community in Hatton township died Tuesday morning at General hospital in Mt. Pleasant after illness from a ruptured appendix and peritonitis. The body lay in state at Friz Undertaking parlors with prayers held then at the Congregational church in Harrison where Mason lodge conducted services. He is survived by his widow and nine children.

Richard Miller Dies After Injuries Near Bungo Lake
Richard Miller of Harrison area died at General Hospital Mt Pleasant after an January 14 accident near Bungo lake. His right arm was lacerated when his coat sleeve caught in a belt being placed on a moving pulley, causing the saw injury and eventual amputation. He never recovered from blood loss and shock.
