Conservation Highlights Fawns Face Starvation in Food Shortage Areas
Conservation Department game specialists warn Michigan deer may face starvation if winter conditions worsen. In Area 2 around Baldwin, fawn weights were well below safe autumn levels, with averages near 53 pounds field dressed versus a 70 pound target. Heavy winter losses could threaten the fawn crop despite 2083 antlerless deer killed during the 16 day season and attempts to boost winter forage near deer yards.
