The Michigan Conservation Department head defends the 1965 deer season amid criticism. Officials expect the harvest to be near average, with license sales possibly reaching 600,000 and about 100,000 deer harvested even if success rates drop.
Coleman voters rejected a 300000 bond issue for new school facilities while approving a 17 mill operating levy 398 to 357 with 44 percent turnout. Officials say citizen turnout was decisive and the district must live with the outcome.
Clare High basketball split two games before the holiday break. Tim Haring piled 17 points and Tom Brown 13 to beat Coleman 59 44 while Harrison surged past Clare 71 62 as Stanfield led Harrison with 15 and Kushman 17 for Clare, signaling a rocky path into January.
Clare Fire Department receives a new 25 000 dollar fire engine shared with Grant Vernon Sheridan and Wise townships. Chief Jim Brinkerhoff notes faster response, higher water capacity, five pre connected hoses and advanced features including a deluge gun and oxygen masks. The unit strengthens regional fire protection and equipment across the area.
A citizens petition circulated to the Glare School Board asks for serious study of a hot lunch program. Sponsors say the measure would require kitchens and dining areas, aim to provide nutritious meals at low cost, and address the noon hour lunch time problem.
Tragedy darkens the holidays as Julie Ann Hendrickson seven and Jody Lynn Hendrickson four drown at Budd Lake while skating on thin ice. Funeral services were held in Harrison with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery. Surviving are their parents James and Mrs Hendrickson, brother Jeff six, and sisters Kristie two and the family home at 320 Spruce Street.
Reverend Richard Cook, pastor of the Clare Church of the Nazarene, tendered his resignation to the church board on Wednesday evening last week and will retire from active ministry as of January 1.
The Clare County Extension Study Clubs host a Christmas Tea at the Harrison Cafetorium on December 9. Mrs. Larry Rieinhardt headed registration while Mrs. Olivé Bruce chaired the event. Speakers Dr Mahbaniroo Gandhi of India and Phuan Phuam of Vietnam discussed women's roles in their countries.
A fire destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Walter about five and a half miles southeast of Coleman. The blaze, second sparked after an earlier effort to extinguish it, forced the Walter children to flee unharmed. Mrs. Walter found the fire at 2 50 pm and Coleman Fire Department fought to salvage part of the dwelling. by 8 pm the interior was fully burned. Owner listed as Mrs. Charles Krepps of Breckenridge. oldest child under six.
Richard J Rankin Jr law research clerk for Judge Donald Holbrook of the Court of Appeals passed the State Bar exam taken in August He and his wife Sue welcomed infant daughter Ann Elizabeth born Friday evening of last week in Clare Onto the next line.
A 17 year old, Robert Querbeck of Clare, drove a 1949 Chevrolet south on McEwan Street toward a red light at Fifth Street. His brakes failed, sending his car into a parked 1965 Chrysler at the Ideal Theater, which then pushed a 1965 Pontiac. Property owners L E Sorenson and Ernest Eisenhauer owned the damaged vehicles parked at the curb. Querbeck was treated at Clare General Hospital for non life threatening injuries and released after observation. Traffic disruption lasted about 40 minutes.
Robert Tubbs is hospitalized in serious condition after an accident at Clare Fabricated Plastics, a Dow Chemical division. He fell from a truck platform while loading cartons of plastic meat trays, struck his head on concrete, and was transported from Mt. Pleasant to St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw for surgery. His parents remain at his side as he has not regained full consciousness.
