The plan calls for relocating and widening 18.7 miles of M-61 from Harrison west to M-115. The route will bypass Marion, straighten curves, and widen to 24 feet with ten foot shoulders. Contracts are to be let in early 1970, with reports on file in regional offices.
A group of eleven downtown Clare men accepted a dare to sweep streets at 5 AM. They proved early work pays off as City Manager Gunn notes the streets were cleaner for pre Christmas shopping while a pumper sprayed remaining dust. The Coffee Hour citation list includes Roy Beltinck Dan Burdo Ken Ritter Paul Schroeder Ben Burdo Clarence Gunn Bob Cimmerer Jim Grove Chuck Clark Ken Barnes and Dex Elden.
Clare Masons invite the public to an open meeting for Ed Strouse's installation as Worshipful Master with ceremonies Saturday evening at the Masonic Temple. Election of John Q. Leek Lodge officers was held Tuesday. new officers for 1966 include Lester Cox, Sam Shepard, Robert Leiter, Frank Poet, Frank Schaaf, Larry Everts, Le Roy Eisenhauer, Bill Goodwin, Ken Martz, Homer O'Dell, Ed Pudway, Warren White, Archie Beatty, and Duncan Koeplinger with George Wilson installing. Refreshments follow in the dining room.
Shoppers fill aisles as Clare's stores stay open until 9 pm in the eight days before December 25. Chamber of Commerce members extend holiday best wishes in a Sentinel greeting on page B3, while local ads highlight bargains and gift assortments from area stores.
Cornerstone laying for the new Lutheran Church on North US-27 set for Sunday December 19 at 4:00 p.m. The public is invited. Lutherans held their annual meeting December 12 and accepted ten new members. 1966 officers elected include Harold Notter president and Paul Schroeder vice president.
Community churches present nativity programs through December 19 and Christmas Eve including pageants recitations and choirs. United Church of Christ Congregational hosts a 6 30 p m pageant with The Christmas Story and a 8 p m Christmas Eve candlelighting. Church of the Nazarene features morning worship recitations and an evening message by Rev Richard Cook. St Cecilia’s Catholic offers Midnight Mass and two Christmas Day masses with confessions Thursday and Friday. First Baptist plans a Sunday program by Sunday School classes and Junior Choir, with Christmas messages by Rev Harold Knickerbocker and Rev Raymond Norton. Other churches schedule caroling pageants and Christmas messages led by pastors and choirs.
County officials led by Chairman Jake Case invite the public to the groundbreaking for the new county building. The ceremony occurs tomorrow at 2 00 p m with Harrison among those urged to attend.
The Clare Board of Education met at 8 00 p m in the high school library on December 13th. Bids were opened for a retired 1952 International school bus and a used Fri gidaire Electric Stove with high bid for the bus at 201 75 and the stove at 111 50. Second semester teaching contracts were approved for Dinah Hall and Virginia Clute. The Annual Financial Report for 1964 65 was reviewed prior to publication.
James McNamara, superintendent in Harrison, says the Dover School District reorganization report by the Clare Intermediate School District Reorganization Committee will be presented as a hearing Monday at the Dover School. The 18 member committee will discuss K-12 district placement and boundary lines, with five Dover residents on the panel. Citizens may question the committee and attend. a final adoption of the extensive report is anticipated.
The Michigan Department of State announces an early sales date for three year motorboat registrations at $3.90. Secretary James M. Hare says the move helps boat owners prepare for new 1966 auto license plates and reduces trips to branch offices.
Clare postoffice announces extended hours with all window service on Saturday December 18 from 8 30 am to 5 pm. Parcel post deliveries will run on Thursdays through the holiday season.
St Louis overwhelmed the Pioneer team 73 41 as fast breaks and steals rattled CHS. Gloré energized the floor and Kushmaul led with 16 points while Davis lamented rims failing to drop. JV squad beat St Louis 61 51 with Dan White scoring 30.
Gordon E. McIntosh assistant postmaster at Clare Michigan retired November 30 1965 after 41 years and 5 months in the postal service at age 60 A December 2 1965 party honored him with a watch engraved with his name and length of service He began July 1 1924 as substitute clerk carrier became city carrier January 16 1930 transferred to clerk October 16 1930 and took duties as assistant postmaster August 31 1947 He says he plans travel and farm work or work around the farm The Clare office saw changes from seven rural carriers to four and mail shifting from trains to trucks and Highway Post Offices He served under six postmasters.
More than 140 members of United Mine Workers Local 15100 and spouses attended a Coleman High School cafeteria banquet. Local President Carl Mowry hosted a program with Doug Hill as featured speaker, plus musical performances by The Barber Bells from Midland.
The South Lansing Street Church of God in Mt. Pleasant presents a Live Nativity Pageant with a cast of 28 portraying the Birth of Christ. Performances run December 15 to 18 at 7:30, 8:00, and 8:30 p.m. at the corner of Broomfield Road and Lynwood Drive two blocks east of Mission Street.
The Isabella Soil Conservation District held its 17th Annual Meeting at the Rosebush School on Tuesday December 7 at 8 p m Arlo Curtiss Coe Township was reelected to the District Board Allan Rawson Gilmore Township was elected to represent the Northwest section of Isabella County Eugene Methner was reelected Chairman Arlo Curtiss Vice Chairman George Wheeler Secretary R Dean Taylor Treasurer and Louie Webb an Advisory Member Mr and Mrs Maurice John Sr entertained the members and visitors with color slides from Russia and Mrs M John spoke on the impressions of Russian farming methods.
