Early Pioneer of Clare County Ended Life Span
C H Rockwell a rugged pioneer of Clare County died at 6 am Tuesday at the Hildebrandt home in Arthur township after months of declining health. Born April 17 1847 in Crawford county Pennsylvania he died December 1948 in Clare County at ninety six years seven months and twenty days. He moved to Michigan as a boy and later settled in Vernon Township Isabella County with wife Janet Elmira Wilson July 4 1866. He hunted deer bear and other game reflecting a long frontier life and helped establish early settlements in Clare County. He served as a stationary engineer in local sawmills from 1873 onward and planted many shade trees lining streets and parks.
