Hundreds of Santa watchers lined Clare streets as the Christmas parade launched the season’s final three weeks. Santa rode a sleigh pulled by reindeer, with Clare High band music, costumed characters, and fire engines adding to the mood despite gray skies and threat of rain. Organizers from the Chamber of Commerce thanked shoppers for filling vantage points from Lone Pine Restaurant to Third Street.

Beaverton Man Drowns Trying to Stop Truck in Pond

Beaverton 16 year old Wilbur S Mann of Surrey Road Rural Route 1 died in a private trout pond late Tuesday night. State Police say he checked a circulating pump, left the truck in gear, and was pulled into the pond when it rolled forward. Coroner ruled death as drowning due to suffocation after body recovered from nine feet of water.

Explosion at Temple gas pumping station kills worker

In December 1947 a blast at the Temple gas pumping station of the Michigan Gas Storage Co. killed one worker and injured six others. The blast caused gas pressure reductions affecting 250 Michigan communities.

The Clare city commission held a regular meeting on December 4 1967 receiving communications from the city attorney the regional grants director and the Continental Insurance Company. They approved building permits for a residence on School Crest and a second story addition to Murphy's Party Store on North McEwan. Courtesy tickets for overdue parking during holidays were approved. Discussed removing parking meters from city streets. Approved ice skating facilities in conjunction with the school on school property. Moved to re advertise for bids for a city lot at Pine and Third. Bills for payment were approved.

Pass Course To Operate Boats In Michigan Law

Michigan's Marine Safety Law takes effect January 1 1968 prohibiting under 16 year olds from operating motor boats over six horsepower without adult supervision unless they complete a training course.

Thefts Suspect Shot While Running Away in Farwell

Rosebush men aged 20 21 and 17 along with a 14 year old were seen near the DuCharme grocery in Farwell. George Kleeman fired a warning shot then hit Russell Simons in the back and head while pursuing the group. Simons was taken to Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant with pellets in his back and head. Police say the four had a car and were loading firewood. no entry evidence found. Prosecution rests with Judge Trucks Claré County.

Recreation Board Plans Area Survey for Clare Community

The Clare Recreation Board, in a series of fall meetings, calls for a survey of recreational needs, facilities and uses. Central Michigan University graduate students directed by Malcolm Elliott will conduct the survey door to door. Planners host a second county-wide Planning seminar Monday evening December 11 at the New County Building Harrison. Traffic Deaths Reduced In November

Michigan reported 188 traffic deaths in November, 18 fewer than a year earlier and nine percent down from 206. By November, 11 months total reached 1,880 deaths, about 211 or 10 percent below last year. Officials expect year end around 200 below the 1966 all time high.

Thieves Take Farwell's New Yale Trim

Clare city police arrested two men after they stole an outdoor Christmas decoration from Farwell. James B. Bryson of Elyria Ohio and Gale E. Simmons of Marlette were identified as suspects. Police chased a vehicle matching a lookout and later found it about an hour later. Suspects were handed to the State Police for further action.
