Talent Show Sponsored by NHS Slated for December 6

The third annual talent show sponsored by the National Honor Society will be held Wednesday December 6 at 7 30 p m in the Clare Elementary School auditorium. Five US 10 Conference schools besides Clare will be represented. Sponsors promise the best entertainment yet and invite the public and area students to attend with admission 75 cents for adults and 50 cents for students.

Dr. William Stinchcombe of Syracuse University staff receives a $1,000 prize for his manuscript French American Alliance in American Politics 1778-1783. The prize is awarded jointly by the Society for French Historical Studies and the Institut Francais de Washington.

Drive Safety Meeting Probes 1967 Traffic Fatalities

The Isabella County Safety Council will meet Tuesday December 5 at 8 in the Mt Pleas ant Municipal Court room. The program analyzes the rise in traffic fatalities and asks whether the driver vehicle or highway is to blame. A safety film will be shown and residents urged to participate.

Parade launches Clare pre Christmas season with Santa and parade

Clare Chamber of Commerce hosts a Christmas parade on McEwan Street this Saturday December 2 at 11:00 a.m. featuring Santa on a sleigh with reindeer, the Clare Fire Department, ten large animals, high school band, and costumed marchers. Santa visits December 9 and 16. children under 10 may win prizes for letters to Santa.

Tom Lewis Named All Conference Linebacker for Clare

Tom Lewis a 190 pound junior on Clare Highs championship team was coaches choice for all conference right linebacker on the defensive unit. He starred on the Pioneers best ever defense praised by voting coaches and mentor Gary Rayburn noted his tackles lead the team. Lewis reads opponent plays and endures rough contact with no letdown through four quarters. He will be counted on as a starting regular for next years squad.

Farwell High School held a National Honor Society initiation on November 21, 1967, with thirteen new members chosen for scholarship leadership character and service. Senior members included Walter Garver Bill Grim Linda Putnam Gloria Shoemaker and others. parents watched as pledges were taken.

Hazardous Farm Occupations for Underage Workers

A new U S Department of Labor list defines hazardous farm jobs for workers under 16 effective January 1 1968. It excludes many common tasks but bans handling certain chemicals blasting agents aircraft flagging and tractor or wagon operations with specifics on tractors over 20 belt horsepower and related equipment.

State Fallout Survey Nears Halfway Mark Michigan 99.8 Percent

Michigan’s mail fallout protection survey in 72 cities nears halfway, with over 691000 questionnaires returned to the Census Bureau. Enumerators in Clare County visited more than 8500 homes and non urban areas 908947 dwellings. The 45.9 percent mail return rate comes from 1.5 million questionnaires sent to residents of large cities. The program began Oct 19, funded by the federal government, and aims to inform households how to protect themselves while aiding community shelter planning.
