Clare High School Pioneers lose both season openers. In Reed City Friday night they fall 49 42 with Dick Nivison scoring 16 for Clare. Tuesday at home St Louis wins 64 42 led by Fred Corbus with 29 points while Denny Benedict adds 22 for Clare. JV squads also drop close contests.

Local Chiropractor Admits Killing Buck Fawn Deer

G. G. Born, a local chiropractor, was arrested November 29 in Arthur township after conservation officers found a dressed doe and buck fawn in his possession. Ballistic tests tied a slug to Born's gun. he pleaded guilty in Municipal Court and was fined 57 dollars with a three year revocation of his deer hunting license.

Clare Man Fined for Traffic Violation in Grant Township

Paul Dionise of Clare was arrested by State Police on US-16 in Grant township June 16. He appeared before Justice W. B. Dunlop in Municipal Court and pleaded nolocontendere for failing to stop within a safe distance, fined $25.

1000th X rayed At Clare Hospital

Clare County figure J B Spikehorn Meyer is injured after slipping on ice fracturing his right hip while en route to inspect gates for Starr Red Eagle at a bear ranch. He was admitted as the 1600th X ray at Clare General Hospital, with two doctors from Saginaw expected to set the fracture and place a cast.

Santa Has Mail Box Near Bank

A letter box has been placed in front of Citizens State Bank for thanking letters to Santa Claus. Jolly St. Nicholas will arrive at 1:00 PM each Saturday starting tomorrow December 8 to collect mail and meet children, until Christmas. If sleighing is poor he may arrive by city fire truck.

New Rule Eases Jackpot Win In Weekly Draw

Harrison Man Dies in Auto Collision Near Harrison

Charles Spehn aged 69, lifelong Harrison resident, was killed when his car collided with a 41 year old Dansville man Clarence Diehl. Diehl and passenger Harold Ward were hospitalized with injuries. Sheriff Amble said Spehn tried to turn left when struck broadside. Brother Ray Spohn involved in separate crash nearby on US 27 en route to funeral.

Two Sentenced by Holbrook on B and E Charge

John Fred Horseman of Clare pled guilty to breaking and entering at night in circuit court. Judge Donald H. Holbrook sentenced him to three and a half to fifteen years in Jackson prison. An accomplice, Genevieve Carpenter of Clare, also pled guilty and received one to fifteen years in Plymouth jail. Clarence Anes, a Saginaw County Indian, was held for probation violation.

Josephine Brighenti announced new officers for Isa bella Extension Groups. District One representatives include Mrs. Arthur Thayer and Mrs. James Barager with Barager replacing Dale Fike. New Instructor For On Farm Training Here

John Jocham Jr has been engaged as instructor for the Veterans On the Farm Training program at Clare High School. About 20 veterans are enrolled meeting one evening weekly for four hours, with instruction in farm management crops and mechanics including welding. The program is funded by the Federal Government through the Veterans Administration and directed by the local Board of Education.

Dwyer Honored Guest At Monday Evening Dinner

Hart Dwyer was guest of honor at a private Barnes Cafe dinner honoring his 35 year Clare post office career ending with retirement on November 30. About 37 relatives and coworkers attended as George Teeter served as toastmaster and gifts included a US savings bond.

Campbell Attends Educators Meet in Grand Rapids

Clare High School Principal Thomas C. Campbell attended the Michigan Secondary School Association meeting in Grand Rapids on November 28 29 and 80. Dr Harlow Hatcher president of the University of Michigan spoke on the cultural impact of schools. Delegates held various small group problem conferences throughout the sessions.

Early Settler Passes Away at Home in Grant

Useba Myers Allen of Grant township died at her home Wednesday November 28 1951 after years of ill health. Born March 10 1861 in Gee township Isabella County she taught in Isabella County schools and married Burton Allen July 2 1884 in Shepherd. Survived by two children six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, plus siblings. Funeral from Clare Methodist Church and burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery. Services led by Rev. Leslie J. Nevins and Russell Thurston in charge. Community members attended from Shepherd Mt. Pleasant Traverse City and other areas. A Christmas sermon series at Congregational Church titled Gods Answer To Troubled Soul is announced with Advent services and a December 23 program.

Local motorists suffer damage in Monday collisions

State Police reported two incidents Monday. Bruce H B Milhalin, 18, of Clare and Howard Green, 41, of Shepherd, had cars damaged at the US 27 and Main Street Rosebush intersection when a parked car and trailer blocked vision. Milholm's damage estimated at 200 dollars and Green's at 106. A second crash on US 10 west of Clare involved Royal L Atking, 49, of Clare, whose car skidded into a ditch while avoiding a slower vehicle, with damage around 500 dollars.
