Lyman Frisbe y Ends Long Service With Forest Fire Division
Lyman Frisbe y a 27 year fore st fire lookout and officer with the Michigan Department of Conservation applies for retirement effective December 1. He began in Clare and Isabella counties in 1926 later serving at the Farwell tower. Now retiring he and Mrs Frisbee plan winters in Florida and summers at their Clear Lake home.

Holiday hours set for Clare post office and stores
The Clare post office will stay open until 5 30 pm on weekdays and Saturdays through Christmas with lobby doors opening at 8 00 am. No city or rural delivery or window service on Christmas Day though special delivery and Christmas mail will be handled. Some Clare stores stay open until 9 00 pm next week and others evenings Wednesday through Saturday. All stores plan all day next Thursday and some will stay open Christmas Eve.

Star Scout Jim Nivison Receives Honor Court Badge
Jim Nivison of Troop 120 Clare earned the Star Scout badge at a Boy Scout Court of Honor held at Cecilias Church basement Monday evening. The Ideal Theatre entertained about 4 600 pupils over Monday to Thursday with Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan films. Schools from Clare Midland and surrounding townships joined 720 attendees from Coleman and others plus 200 from Midland county. A sequence of matinees featured hundreds of students from multiple districts with candy and popcorn provided by the theatre and Clare Chamber of Commerce.

Clare Debaters Score Two Wins Over Ashley
Clare High School debaters defeated Ashley teams in two rounds led by Carolyn Schreiber and Bill Wentworth on the affirmative and Bill Seiter and Dick Ulrich on the negative. They argued conscription for all American citizens in wartime with Elwood Garrett and Charles Fountain opposing and Janet Cordrey and Betty Simcox supporting. Judges included senior debaters from Central Michigan College of Education and officials from St. Louis and Saginaw. Two Clare teams advance to Gladwin for the December 17 debate in the Central CO League and Michigan High School Forensic Association circuit.

Mrs J Northon Dies In Denver At 75
Mrs J Northon longtime Vernon Township resident died Sunday in Denver Colorado at age 75 years three months and 28 days. She and her husband John operated Clare Road Leveler and Farm Service Shop in Clare before retirement and moved to Colorado last spring. She was born in Toronto Canada and grew to womanhood in Isabella County. She belonged to Clare Congregational Church and Guild and was a past matron of Zenobia Chapter OES. Funeral services were held in Denver with interment there.

A local dealer pressed a customer over a two cent tax on a peck of potatoes asking about property and children. The customer replied no ownership and no children, prompting the dealer to say taxpayers fund a school for the children and urged payment or leave the potatoes. Deaths of Fred Dunwoodie and Clarence Hay
Fred Dunwoodie aged 39 of Ann Arbor died at University Hospital this week. He previously lived in Clare and was the son of Mrs Elizabeth and the late Lea Dunwoodie. Clarence Hay of Saginaw died Tuesday afternoon and was buried in a Saginaw cemetery. He leaves five sisters and two brothers all residing in Southern Michigan.
