Veterans invited to join Naval Reserve Inactive Program

All veterans of the Army Navy Marine Corps and Coast Guard and ex WAVES may enroll in the V-6 Inactive Duty program. Enrollment lasts four years with no draft board ties. Lt Faber will enroll eligible veterans at Clare Post Office on Friday December 13 1946 between 9 00 a m and 4 30 p m.

Hartman Retires After Forty-Two Years with Michigan Bell

Claude A Hartman of Clare retires on pension October 19 after forty two years in telephone work. He began in 1904 with Michigan State Telephone Co at Battle Creek, later with Copper Range Railway at Houghton, and since 1918 served as lineman and repair man in Houghton before moving to the central division at Clare. He is a member of the Wolverine Chapter, Telephone Pioneers of America.

Clare Players on Northeastern Michigan All Star Team

Three Clare high school players Wilbur Ireland Willard Ireland and Bud Rodabaugh were named to the Northeastern Michigan All Star Squad honored at a banquet in Bay City The event featured a keynote by Ernie McCay coach Rich ardson attended by 33 players from 23 schools and Dow Chemical Company sponsorship The Clare trio also received honorable mention on the Detroit Free Press 1946 All State team indicating high local pride.

A group of fourteen pleaded guilty before Justice Sam A Anitheins son in Clare to violations of conservation laws during deer season. Eleventh Annual Clare Kiwanis Charter Night Held at Hotel Doherty

More than a hundred Kiwanians and guests attended the Clare Kiwanis Club’s eleventh annual charter night in the Hotel Doherty banquet room. Tim Cotter served as toastmaster and introduced speaker Joseph Grigware of Lake who discussed Kiwanis goals and Clare club achievements. The evening concluded with God Bless America and dancing until midnight.

Midland Lad Hurt Last Week When Falling From Car

Joel Vanstee eight year old son of Mr and Mrs Blisworth Vanstee of Midland fell from his parents car near Farwell on Wednesday November 27 suffering a concussion. George Hickey Dies in Petoskey Hospital

George Phillip Hickey former Clare resident died November 26 1946 at Little Traverse Hospital Petoskey after ten days illness He was born July 26 1882 in Carleton Monroe County Michigan and spent years in Clare Boyne City and Detroit He leaves four sisters two brothers and many friends Funeral at St Cecilia Church with Requiem High Mass and burial in the family lot.

Woman Receives Word on Son’s Grave in Holland

Mrs. Dorothy Hess of Sheridan township receives a letter from Mrs. H Theuns of Heerten Holland confirming the grave of her son Pfc. Harold Hess in Germany is cared for. Theuns says she tends the grave with flowers for her own son in service in India and asks for a reply and photo.

Michigan Liquor Commission Aids Youth Control

The Michigan Liquor Control Commission launches a state wide education campaign to help licensees keep under 21s from bars. Four color posters show a teen being refused a drink as investigators and police place them in licensed premises. Flynn cites 540 minor related cases from 1240 total between 1945 and 1946 and urges 1947 law changes while promoting city recreation programs to curb youth tavern visits.

Watson D. Merchant of 1523 Federal Ave Saginaw died suddenly Friday November 29 1946 at work. Born July 21 1880 in Ionia county he lived in Harrison Leota Washington Ohio and Saginaw where he served as Secretary Treasurer of the Saginaw Home Builders Association. Michigan hunters return home as deer roam the woodlands unmolested. The season brought twenty six deaths from gunfire, traffic, or exertion, plus a missing man still sought.
