New Ski Area to Open North of Clare

Snowsnake Mountain, a new northern Michigan winter sports center, will open eight miles north and a half mile west of Clare once snowfall allows. The site includes a 42 by 24 foot restaurant with glass front, a 12 by 24 foot warming house, a rope tow, seven runs for all levels, night skiing, and regraded slopes free of stumps. Developed by James D Arcy, the center invites inspection and upcoming skiing as weather permits.

Daisley Goodman Laid To Rest In Clare Cemetery

Funeral services for Mrs. Daisley Goodman widow of Fred Goodman were held at Thurston Funeral Home at 2:00 pm with Rev. Chas. B. Hahn officiating. Interment followed in Cherry Grove cemetery beside her husband who died last August.

Judge Don Holbrook Honored by Clare Kiwanis Dinner

Fifty four members and guests of the Clare Kiwanis Club attended a dinner at Hotel Doherty to honor Circuit Judge Donald E. Holbrook who ends the year as club president. Mt Pleasant attorney Gerald Cotter was principal speaker praising the judge’s diligence and leadership. Also present were Clare County Prosecuting Attorney Harold B. Hughes Arlie Osborne of Mt Pleasant and Charles Fegar of Covington Kentucky. Election of officers followed with Mark Bicknell as President Dr K Hammerberg as Vice President Ace Parker as Secretary Treasurer.

Robert M. Fall dies after long illness at 60

Robert M. Fall, 60, driller for Pure Oil Company until retirement four years ago, died early Thanksgiving morning November 25 near Clare. Born April 19, 1888, he left a widow Florence and several relatives. Services were held November 29 at 10:30 a.m. at Doherty Funeral Home with Fr. J. I. Sruba presiding. burial in Cherry Grove cemetery.

Mrs M Fillmore laid to rest in Hope

Christena Peddie Fillmore born 1867 Stratford Ontario lived Cass City and Hope. Married Millard Fillmore and resided in Hope until her death November 22 1948 at age 81. Survived by three children eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services held at Hope Methodist Church with Rev. William Hoffman. Interment in North Hope Cemetery. Relatives from Saginaw Detroit Ferndale Bay City Mt. Pleasant Midland and Clare attended.

Judge Ray Hart Dies in Midland After Long Illness

Judge Ray Hart, renowned jurist and former Midland Isabella and Clare county district judge, died at his Midland home after a long illness. He retired from the twenty first judicial circuit bench last December after thirty years on the bench. Clare High School to open basketball season on home floor

Clare High School will start the 1948-49 basketball season at home this Friday against Reed City with a 7:00 PM tip. Coach Richardson returns six lettermen including guards Hahn and Dwyer and forwards Wallace Worstell Joslin, with Brinkerhoff at center and team reserves stepping up. Assistant Coach Wheeler will focus on junior high, while Don Grill assists with varsity duties.

Gunfire kills ten during Michigan deer season ends

The Michigan deer season closed with ten gunshot deaths, including a woman, down from eighteen last year. About 330,000 hunters participated, while weather and storms affected hunting. Nearly 10,000 deer and 300 bears were taken across the Straits. A missing 15 year old, Richard LaPine, remains under search as snow thaw. Fifty five Clare county violators were arrested for loaded guns in cars and illegal venison. all plead guilty and paid fines.

Boy's Counsellor Rotary Speaker Wednesday Noon

Myron Jerome retired educator and boy counsellor spoke at the Rotary noon meeting. Farwell Man Shoots Self in Despondency

Scott Horn, 67, Farwell resident, is in critical condition at Clare Hospital after suffering two gunshot wounds to the head from a 22 caliber revolver found in his hand. He was discovered unconscious at his rabbit shed and transported by car to Dare Hospital. X rays revealed bird shot in the head.

John Dunsmore services held for 1948 death in Missaukee

Funeral services were held November 24 for John Dunsmore who died November 21, 1948 at age thirty nine after inhaling fumes from a light plant motor. He was born April 10, 1909 in Missaukee County and lived on a farm with his mother. He leaves six brothers and three sisters, plus nephews and aunts. The service was at the Leota schoolhouse with Rev Bailey officiating and burial in Frost Cemetery.

Local Citizens Clash In Traffic Complaints and Fines

Ralph Hether and Bugs Foell traded complaints over right of way on US-19 near Farwell. Both faced Municipal Court hours later but charges were dismissed after Hether failed to appear. Ronald Doherty, 20, Clare, pleaded guilty to assault and battery and was fined with costs and probation. Norman Wright of Bellevue speeding led to bond forfeiture. A Spartan Sports house trailer broke loose near Clare, causing $700 to $800 in damage after detaching from a 1946 Chevrolet.

Mrs Albert H Heitzelsman Dies After Illness

Anna Elizabeth Green Heitzelsman died November 27 1948 at Central Michigan Community Hospital at age 21 years 7 months 27 days after a several year illness. She was born March 31 1927 in Flint Michigan and lived much of her youth in Mann Siding. She married Albert Henry Heintzelman April 27 1942 and left three children Elizabeth Jean Albert Andrew Janet Ann. Her family and many friends mourn her.
