Superintendent Richard Wheeler announced the first day of classes is September 4. The school bookstore opens August 26 with texts on sale 9 30 to 11 30 mornings and 1 30 to 3 30 afternoons. Late registrations are accepted the week of August 26 and kindergarten enrollments should occur then.
The Clare-Isabella District 8 Board hires W. L. McIntosh as elementary principal for the coming school year, replacing Alan Tulk who resigned last summer. McIntosh, formerly Marion Michigan superintendent for eight years, has 15 years in education. He and his wife plan to move to Clare before school starts after interviews with Superintendent Richard Wheeler. Also, bids were awarded for fuel oil and gasoline for buses and milk for the elementary milk program.
Police in Clare offer to supervise Sunday morning traffic at local churches on US-27 with pedestrians urged to use the State and McEwan crosswalk for safety. A Central Methodist Church group from Detroit will attend a Prayer Retreat at God's Way Camp starting August 26 and shop locally. An auto caravan of 1920s-30s classics paused in Clare on its fifth annual Classic Car Club of America tour, starting West Nyack New York en route to Milwaukee. Rev. George Stanford, formerly in Clare, surprised locals by appearing on TV's Ive Got A Secret panel and touting his Vicksburg church's July 21 Christmas celebration.
The Clare Junior Chamber of Commerce promotes a cleanup drive under the Deep Clare Clean slogan. They place large push top trash cans downtown to curb litter, with city crews ensuring regular emptying on garbage collection days.
Certificates of appreciation will be awarded to Clare, Art Damoth, and W B Dunlop for 15 years of service on the local draft board. Bernard Wilson, draft board clerk, announced the honor.
Thefts of accessories from several airplanes occurred during a breaking and entering at Clare Airport on August 18. Police Chief William Cook says planes were in hangars and officers are continuing the investigation. An August 19 crash at Fourth Street and US-10 involved Rita Huntley and Neil R. Ackerman. investigators attributed the collision to faulty brakes.
The Clare City Police received a light grey four door Oldsmobile delivered this week. Greer Auto Sales sold the car to the city and submitted the only bid, having also supplied last year’s patrol car.

Grace Rinehart, Harrison high school teacher and vice president of the Clare-Isabella MEA district, attended the Michigan Education Association fall leadership training at its Camp on St Marys Lake near Battle Creek. The three day conference ran August 19 to August 21 and covered membership promotion public relations ethics and standards of instruction. The Rineharts returned in early August from a two month European tour.
The Clare Rod and Gun Clubhouse is progressing steadily with walls up at the site across from Clare Airport east of town. When finished, it will include a meeting room an indoor rifle and archery range and will be used by Boy Scouts for Conservation project meetings.

Frank Lewis of Lake George, 71, jailed at Harrison on a murder warrant after a fatal shooting of a vacationer near Lewis cottage. Prosecution cites alcohol in blood at .13 and lie detector tests casting doubt on memory loss claims. Witnesses place quarrel over driving, followed by three shots. Lewis failed to surrender and was later flushed from his cabin. Prosecutor Bicknell and Sheriff Darling describe the case as ongoing with key witness availability delaying arraignment.
Dr. C. W. Muehlenberger of the Michigan State Crime Detection Laboratory explained procedures for testing alcohol effects in suspects. He described blood, urine, and breath analysis and presented charts showing intoxicated behavior linked to over 40 percent of violent auto fatalities, with James S. Bicknell III arranging the program at the club meeting.
Clare city officials awarded the contract to Andrew Irving and company to build a new fire hall in the city park with a forty day construction goal. In the same meeting J & KR Contractors won the bid to install curb and gutter in several sections of Clare.
Clare county sent two students to Central Michigan College in Mt Pleasant for the summer session. Irene Clare of Clare attained a Bachelor of Science in elementary education. Noel Fr Wilson received a Master of Arts degree.
Roscommon Little League teams travel to Clare for a return game after a matchup scheduled in Roscommon tonight. The August 26 contest features Roscommon II against Clare Little Leaguers in Clare.
After losing fifteen varsity lettermen in 1956 CHL football, coach George Ferry seeks candidates from last year’s JV players to fill half the roster. Twelve veterans return, with twenty former JVs bolstering the lineup as Perry High prepares a balanced offense and depth for a seven game schedule beginning September 20.
