Michigan State Banks Ltd In Paper Production

State Banks Ltd In Paper Production Thirty thousand workers in 189 Michigan pulp, paper, and paper products mills produce 289,859 tons of wood pulp, 1,753,831 tons of paper and paperboard annually, and thou sands of tons of manufactured paper products, according to Charles G. Allen of Detroit, chairman of Michigan Forest Industries, Michigan ranks fifth in paper and paperboard production, Allen said, behind Wisconsin, New York, Louisiana and Florida. He quoted figures from the newest edition of Facts About The Nation's Pulp, Paper and Paperboard Industry, Published by American Forest Products Industries, national sponsor of the Tree Farm program. The United States produces two-fifths of the world's wood pulp, this is more than twice that of second-ranking Canada, and ten times that of fifth-ranking Russia. Michigan ranks eighteenth among the states in this category, producing 1.4 per cent of the nation's total. Mr. Allen predicted a sharp rise in Michigan's position, pointing to substantial pulp mill expansion now in progress in the state. Per capita consumption of paper and paperboard in the United States is 421 pounds annually. Allen said this is equal to the combined per capita consumption of Italy, France, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Canada ranks second.
