Russell No 1 Oil Well Draws Surge of Interest

Interest in oil field development centers on the Russell well No 1 located near Clare Michigan. Drilling reached the Dundee of the Russell well and oil was struck after a period of measurements with a two million gas flow and an initial 2500 barrel daily rate claimed. Hundreds visit the field daily as more locations are declared and production debates continue amid low crude prices.

County road commissioners attend Bay City meeting

Name Chosen for Clare County's New Golf Course

The naming committee for the Bowler golf course near Clare met at Theo Bowler’s law office to select from 87 entries. The winning title was No 18 Twin Wims Golf Course submitted by Mrs Annabelle Hampton, with second choice No 51 The W.HE.B submitted by Ola Hall.

Torch murderers pass through Clare Thursday morning

A group of eight state police moved the torch murderers through Clare en route to Marquette prison after their transfer from Jackson. The trio who confessed to killing and burning two youths and their female companions near Milan last week drew mixed reactions from onlookers as crowds gathered. Fred Smith and David Blackstone rode together in one car and chatted untroubled, while Frank Oliver in another appeared dazed and somber.

Randall School celebration set for August in Grant township

The Randall School planning committee invites past and present residents, students, and teachers to a celebration on Saturday August 29 at the Randall school grounds in Clare county. The program includes flag raising, games, a bucking bronco exhibition, a picnic lunch with roasted ox sandwiches, speeches, music, and various solos and duets featuring local performers. Robinett Clan Holds 17th Annual Reunion in Alwoods Grove

Members of the Robinett family gathered in Alwoods Grove for the 17th annual reunion on Sunday August 16 with about 150 attendees. A long chicken dinner under maple trees filled the day as officers were re-elected and reports approved. Five deaths and four marriages marked the year, plus three births, with relatives from Indiana Michigan and nearby towns joining in portraits of kinship and recitations and songs before departure.

Natural Gas Reaches Clare In First Commercial Outlet

Natural gas was turned into the Clare division of Michigan Gas Corporations system shortly after noon marking the first commercial outlet of the Clare field. The Vernon well supplies the new product and a crew of about 18 men are converting appliances. Clare will use the same rate as artificial gas for now with higher heat value.

City of Clare to be served by new fire truck soon

At the city council meeting a committee from the fire department presented plans for a new Model A Ford fire truck. The vehicle will reuse parts from existing equipment to reduce costs and will be capable of 55 miles per hour with a new pumper. The rural pumper will move to the city truck, with other changes. the truck will serve both city and rural fires.

Samuel C Kirkbride born May 20 1858 in Philadelphia New York moved to Michigan and Clare where he ran a general store and later served as postmaster eight times. He supported community welfare and Freemasonry and planned his funeral with friend Rev H B Johnson.
