The Mackinac Straits Bridge progresses toward a November 1, 1967 opening. The 26 195 foot span will connect Mackinaw City and St. Ignace and become the world’s longest of its kind, with a 86 million construction cost and tolls similar to the ferry.
Clare County social security payments totaled 21 721 dollars to 682 residents at year end 1953. Trav erse City office manager William E B LaRock noted a 21 percent year over year rise and highlighted retirement beneficiaries as the largest group. National data show six million recipients by end of 1953, with nearly one million more than December 1962.
St. John's Lutheran Church will not hold Sunday School classes until September. Pastor Reverend Robert J. Voss announced the change after finding many youngsters were showing up for regular sessions.

Clare High School releases the 1954 55 football schedule with eight away and home games listed from September to November all starting at 8 PM The official homecoming game is yet to be announced and a football candidate medical exam is set for August 25 at 9 00 PM at Clare High School
Garland Bennett, an auto salvage dealer on East 2nd Street, faced Clare Fire Department when a burning car on his premises sparked alarms. Fire crews found it was a routine burn used to salvage metal from old cars, prompting chuckles rather than catastrophe. Clay County Fire Chief Stanley Parish urged residents to report grass fires beyond Clare City limits to the Conservation Department Field Station at Harrison, telephone 4661.
Clare County Pomona Grange will meet Riverside Grange on Tuesday evening August 24th to discuss local affairs and upcoming events. The gathering will bring together members from both granges to coordinate activities and share updates.
Early entries in the 4 H and open class livestock events show record growth for the 9th annual Isabella County Youth and Farm Fair to be held August 24 28 at Mt Pleasant. Manager Richard Hickman reports larger livestock sections with tents added to the fair grounds and premiums totaling 4500 the largest in fair history. The grandstand opener features Fred Cashen Mt Pleasant vs Marty Simmons Jr Saginaw in a 1954 middleweight Golden Glove clash.
The Scott Drillers softball team finished 12 2 in the West Central League to claim top honors. Other league members include Scotts Sunoco Rogers Johns Market Barryton Ewart and Reed City. In the Class B District playoff in Mt Pleasant they lost 6 0 to Fabiano of Mt Pleasant after out hitting 7 4. They will travel to Cadillac for the Invitational Tournament from Sept 10 to 19 led by pitchers Joe Greer and Mel Leader who split league wins.

Some 825 Clare Public School students will return this fall to seven new teachers new equipment new courses and a refreshed school paint job. New staff includes Arthur Freel in Sixth Grade and Mrs Frell in Third Grade with multiple moves across grades and subjects plus a new basketball coach Robert C Baker from Huntington College Indiana.
Ten women from Portland joined Clare golfers at Twin Elms on August 18 for a match won by Clare 3 to 1. awards went to Butch Edgar for low gross 47 and Mrs. Sarah Rice for 14 putts. Clare’s Mrs. Ruby Garfield led with low gross 45. a four way putt tie ended with Mrs. Lange winning. Medalist was Mrs. William Lange with 99 as qualifier. next Wednesday urged for all members to attend.
Nine cars of a 60 car Ann Arbor freight train derailed about a mile and a half from Farwell Tuesday afternoon. Rails were bent and ties ripped for about 500 feet. No one was hurt. A railroad spokesman said the cause was undetermined. Four or five section crews worked Wednesday to make the track passable for a morning freight. Cargo damage was minor according to railroad officials. a wrecker was en route to clear the embankment. State police remained on scene until detectives took over.
Charles Harrison 77 known as Mr Pleasant was found dead early Thursday near his Mt Pleasant area farm after leaving home Wednesday morning to pick berries. His death was attributed to a heart attack.

Pinocchio returns in Technicolor at the Ideal Theatre this Sunday and Monday. The musical feature follows Jiminy Cricket guiding Pinocchio through strange lands with characters like Monstro the Whale, set to six songs by Leigh Warline.
