Registration to Begin for Selective Service in Clare County

Local Board No 4 will open in Clare with registration starting August 30 as America's peacetime draft begins. 26 year olds register that day. younger men follow by age group through mid September with rules on proof of service and birth certificates. First induction projected around October 1 with about 30 000 men drafted nationwide.

Clare Woman Dies at Clare Hospital Age 61

Mary Louis Teller Grosvenor, born July 29, 1887 in Cohoo tah Michigan, died August 15 1948 at Clare Hospital aged 61. She lived in Clare 26 years, married to Arthur Grosvenor in Detroit in 1908, survived by husband eight children and eight grandchildren. Funeral held at home on Wheaton Ave mid afternoon with Rev. Chas Hahn officiating. burial at Cherry Grove cemetery. Doherty Funeral Home in charge.

Mature Pheasants Released On Farms Of This Vicinity

The Glare Rod and Gun Club received 480 thirteen weeks old pheasants from the Department of Conservation and released them in Grant Sheridan and Arthur townships with farmers’ cooperation. About half the birds are males. Farmers will be notified of any violations and fed if needed. Hunters are urged to save hens for future hunting.

Remains of Two Dysingers Enroute Home for Burial

Mr and Mrs W D Dysinger learned that the remains of their two sons Rolland and Vern Dysinger are enroute to Clare for burial. The brothers served in the European Theater during World War II and were killed in France and Germany. Funeral arrangements await their arrival.

Mrs Slentz Dies After Long Illness at 78

Jennie Elizabeth Davies Slentz died at Clare Hospital early Wednesday August 18 following her husband Icem Slentz by twelve days. A native of Ohio, she taught school before marriage and raised five children with her husband on farms in Clare county and Mt. Pleasant. Surviving are four daughters, one son, six granddaughters, and a brother Charles Davies of Lima. Funeral at the Clare Methodist Church Friday at two.

Clare County 4-H Council Plans Reorganization

Clare County 4-H leaders met in Harrison to form a reorganization committee. Members Marian Magnus Esther Darling Floren Pudway Harl Simmons and Cecil Hubel will study successful county organizations and draft a plan to report in October. County funds for a 4-H and Home Demonstration Agent are available, and a food concession is planned to fund a future club camp. Ray Harrold outlined September county fair plans and potential new building if exhibits justify expansion.

Temple Young Man Takes Own Life

Daryle Brockway age 35 killed himself last Friday at his home south of Temple. His wife waited in the car after an infected foot and planned to go to Lakeview. She heard the shot when he returned inside and found him dead with a twelve gauge shotgun to his chin. Deputy sheriff Amble and Dr. Lamb of Farwell investigated. death ruled self-inflicted. Brockway had been despondent for some time and the body was moved to Lakeview.

Assault And Rubber Check Cases Among Those Completed Past Week

Two old cases were completed in justice court with pleas and light sentences. The People vs Floyd R. Campbell saw the charge reduced to simple assault and a peace bond set. The People vs Alva Charette also reduced to simple assault with a two year peace provision. A separate matter involved a bad check case resulting in restitution and costs. Local traffic and theft incidents were also reported, including a hit on a stop sign and stolen items at local businesses.
