Early Pioneer of Clare County Dies in Lansing

Nancy Harrison a former Arthur township resident died August 4 1948 in Lansing after long illness at age 79. Born October 14 1868 in Logan County Ohio she and husband James Harrison moved to Clare county by covered wagon. Survived by two sons Hisworth and Harry two daughters Mrs Fred C Scott and Mrs Murl Bursley fourteen grandchildren seven great grandchildren one sister Mrs Mary E Samson. Services held August 10 at Robinson and Halifax Funeral Home with Rev H V Wade officiating. Burial Mt Hope Cemetery with pallbearers Robert Harrison William Secor Floyd Hart Murl Buregley Floyd Bell Kenneth Stoll.

Ladies Tournament Opens at Country Club Next Monday

Ten women golfers came from Portland to face Clare women at Clare Country Club on Wednesday. the match ended in a tie with Jean Oradit posting Clare’s low net score. Blanche Stoll won the prize for low score among social golfers. The tournament opens next Monday morning at 9 30 with first qualifying rounds at the Country Club course.

Captain Hubel Stricken After Fighting Fire

Fire rooted at the Hubel farm threatened a garage and lumber piles after sparks from an Ann Arbor Railroad locomotive. Captain Hubel helped firefighters before suffering a fatal heart attack. Local blazes and a forest fire near North Rosebush School followed, with injuries and insurance coverage noted. A nighttime fire drill at Cedar Street demonstrated rapid response times.

Clare County Pioneer Lucy Hains Dies at Harrison Home

Grandma Hains, early Clare County pioneer and Dover store operator, dies at 97. Born Lucy Adams in 1850, she taught in Hinkleville and Dover, helped found a Tonkin Sunday School, and lived on several Clare farms with husband Adelbert Hains, who died in 1934. She leaves three sons, twelve grandchildren, and many descendants. Funeral at Clare Baptist Church with Rev. Hilton officiating.

Icem Clarence Sientz born June 15 1868 Van Wert County Ohio died August 6 1948 at Clare Hospital after a ten months illness from injuries in a mobile accident. Death of James B. Lyde in Perry Market

James B. Lyde, longtime Harrison businessman, died of a heart attack Tuesday morning while shopping at Perry and First Super Market. He was taken home, passed away about an hour later. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 Friday afternoon from the home with interment in Paris Michigan.

Wrecks Leave One Critically Injured and Several Hurt

Two traffic accidents in the vicinity left one person critically injured and several others hurt. Joseph Poet, 18, Clare R-2, reported a night collision after approaching a truck with no taillight on Route 08 27 near Clare. Poet and passenger Robert Cimmerer, 18, were taken to Clare Hospital with minor wounds while the other occupants sustained varying injuries. The other driver, Ray Dyer, 45, St Louis, suffered chest trauma and multiple severe injuries. his wife also from St Louis had grave wounds and remains in critical but slightly improved condition. Action against Poet may proceed depending on Mrs Dyer’s outcome. Continued on Page Twelve.

Passes Sudenly at Clare Home Captain Delos Hubel

Captain Delos Hubel son of Frederick H and Phoebe Hubel was born Sept 28 1891 in Grant Township Clare County Michigan and died suddenly at his home August 6 1948 at age 56. He worked on the farm with his father and later ran a craft shop doing radio repair carpentry and novelties. He was a longtime Clare resident member of Odd Fellows and Masons. He married Thelma Sudman of Boyne City who died twenty four years ago. Survived by sisters Mrs Norman Wilson and Mrs Herbert Randall brother Ora Hubel and several nephews and a grandniece. Services were Aug 9 at Congregational Church with Rev Charles Kleinhardt officiating and burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery. Out of town relatives attended.

The body of Frank Baker who drowned at Decker Lake last week was found floating on the surface Tuesday afternoon at about four by Sheriff Seaver Amble and Robert Campbell during a daily search. Dragging had paused earlier after several days with no result.
