Nationwide Draft Registration Rules For Young Men

Fred Goodman Dies in Clare After Illness
Fred Goodman longtime Clare resident and accountant died at home on Friday after months of failing health. Born October 11 1887 in Clare Michigan he lived in Astoria Oregon before settling in Clare twenty five years ago. He was a member of Clare Methodist Church a Master Mason of Henry Clay Lodge New York City and Walter H Larman Post American Legion survived by wife Daisley a sister Hazel Goodman Randall and other relatives. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Monday at 2 00 pm with Masonic ritual at Cherry Grove cemetery.

The Clare Women Golfers completed another successful year with finals last week. Lucille Haley defended her championship in the top flight by defeating Harriet Hampton 4-3. Other flight winners included Jean Cradit and Grace Frey, with runner ups Beatrice Lange and Jennie Bowler respectively. A Handicap Tournament is planned next, led by Blanche Stoll and Grace Frey.

Clare Manufacturing Company hosted a Friday dinner at Clare Country Club to honor the factory boys softball team at season’s end. Fourteen players attended as Fowler Noble praised teamwork and morale from the sports program while Bud Drebert and Jack Jory highlighted management support and camaraderie. Chris Smith, team manager, thanked the company for its support and the fine dinner.

Farwell School will open on Wednesday September 8 with enrollment and book issuance. A teachers’ meeting is set for Tuesday September 7. Bessie Henderson a longtime Clare resident died August 19 1948 at her East Sixth Street home after a long illness Age seventy five years seven months and eighteen days She came to Clare from Stewartown Ontario in 1881 married Hiram Sutton in 1889 had six children two sons and four daughters survive Her funeral was held Sunday at the Congregational Church with burial at Cherry Grove Cemetery noting OES honors.

Sportsmen's Club Urges Caution on Forest Fires
Clare Rodavid Gut Club in city hall urged fire precautions amid several fires in the area. A Michigan United Conservation Clubs bulletin warned of polluted waters with Tobacco River east of Clare under attention. A city resident urged action against pollution while the river segment near the children's pool west of US-27 bridge and Tourist Park was said to be pollution free. Walter Hiroh was named as a contact for dam project info. Attendance prizes were won by Bert Head Frank Nessler John Archbold and Rolland Gunderman. Fishing reports noted a four and a half pound bass from Gut Lake and a three and a half pounder from another local lake.

Second Annual Shaver Reunion Held at State Park
The Shaver family reunion met Sunday August 15 at Wilson State Park with fifty eight relatives from Clare Gladwin Harrison Lansing Jackson Pontiac and Detroit and four visitors. At 1 30 p m a pot luck dinner followed by ice cream and cake. A business meeting retained officers for another year and planned a program next August on the third Sunday. Oldest attendee was Miss Zella Tryon Detroit and youngest Michael Dean Alioto Detroit. Since last year there have been one death two births and three marriages.

Three Injured in Whizzer Bike and Car Crash
A 1948 Whizzer bike driven by 17 year old Lewis Paxton and a 1940 Ford driven by Frances Carncross collided at McEwan and Third Streets. Paxton suffered scalp lacerations. Elaine Carncross age 4 and Linda Aberhart age 2 had minor injuries. A three year old, Ronald Lennox, severed a wrist artery after a separate stairs fall. Police also jailed Louis M. Jones of St. Louis after a gas station incident and payment dispute.
