Mrs. Alice Van Sicklen a longtime Clare resident died at her son Edgar’s Vernon township farm on August 8 1945 after a three week illness She aged 82 years 5 months and 29 days Burial followed at Cherry Grove with services at Clare Methodist Church Rev Chas B Hahn officiating She was active in the Women’s Society of Christian Service and was survived by four sons and one daughter including Florence Olson of Des Plaines Illinois.

The Clare Methodist Church School Board gathered in the church parlors Friday evening with Mrs. Earl Sternaman in charge. Miss Doris Gerow played piano as Rev. Charles B. Hahn led prayers. Mrs. Marvin Witbeck asked for and received a leave of absence. Mrs. Norman Maxwell was elected superintendent with Mrs. C. B. Neff as assistant. Harley Sowle named treasurer after Harl Ssernaman’s resignation. Rally and Promotion Day set for September 30 during Sunday School hour with teacher consecration at the church service. Birthday surprise for Mrs. Fred Pireson capped the meeting with gifts and refreshments.

Field Training of Dogs Lawful in Downstate Counties
Training of dogs for day time hunting becomes lawful starting August 15 across downstate counties with open seasons for rabbit pheasant ruffed grouse prairie chicken and sharptailed grouse from October 15 to November 5. Night hunting dogs for raccoon opossum and skunk get a September 1 to October 5 allowance this year and may be withdrawn if opposition arises.

The Clare Riding Club and guests from Bay City Saginaw Pinconning Mt Pleasant Shepherd Gladwin Owosso and Clare spent August 4 5 at the B and H Ranch 11 miles north of Farwell. Harold Hanchett hosted a feast roasting a yearling ox and Art Damoth cooked it. After a pot luck supper guests rode moonlit trails and joined a square dance around a campfire. Breakfast featured pancakes bacon eggs and coffee. The event ended with horse trading and thanks to the hosts for a memorable weekend.

Sgt Reginald J House received an honorable discharge from the Army Air Forces at Fort Sheridan Illinois on August 10 with 126 points after fifty eight months of service including forty five months overseas. He joined in 1940 and served in Oahu Hickam Field Central South Southwest Pacific and Far Eastern Air Forces earning five battle stars and a Bronze Star. He returned to the United States in August 1944 and has since been stationed in Florida and Lions Falls South Dakota.

Charles F. Kane Dies in Flint After Ill Health
Charles Francis Kane, longtime Clare resident and Buick employee turned civil service worker, died at his Flint home Monday evening after four years of ill health. Born September 8, 1881 in Saginaw, he moved to Clare in infancy and later married Elanora Sears in 1912. He and Elanora had three sons Sears, Charles, and John. Sears died young. Kane was 63 years old. He attended Clare Public Schools and was active in state and local politics and civic affairs.
