Gilmore Youth Dies Under Tractor

Seventeen year old Charles Verdon of Gilmore township died when a tractor toppled onto him at his father Harry Verdon’s home. State Police reported the incident occurred Monday as the vehicle tilted into a ditch on a hillside. Charles could not free himself before help arrived. His father and younger brother William were on the tractor but unharmed.

Patrol Car Flips In Pursuit Near Clare

State Police trooper Thomas Maynard of the Mt. Pleasant Post escaped injury when his patrol car flipped in a chase on US 10 west of Clare. He lost control while overtaking a speeder amid heavy traffic and oncoming vehicles. the car rolled in a ditch, its top crushed and all glass shattered. Kostrzewa credited the seat belt as critical to the trooper’s safety.

Car Fire Damages Vehicle in Clare Stop

The Carl French family of Jackson stopped for lunch in Clare. Their car was parked and locked when a fire caused $50 in damage after a cigarette lighter dropped on the front seat. Firefighters pried open a window vent to reach the fire.

Eight Point Lakers Announce August Hobby Show and Boat Parade

The Eight Point Lakers plan their annual hobby show for Saturday August 15 with a Sunday boat parade on August 9 to advertise the exhibit. Entries range from African Violets to a nine ton ancient steam engine, with cash awards for most elaborate and most popular displays. Richard L. Hart aged 43 formerly of between Clare and Loomis died in Clinton county after a truck crash near St. Johns and a following fire. Plane crash leaves Robert Carter unhurt near Cornwell Ranch

Robert Carter, of Ill, escaped injury when a small plane his owned failed during takeoff near his home north of the Cornwell Ranch main buildings. The aircraft crashed into thick brush, suffering total loss but Carter walked away unharmed.

Prosecutor's Son Killed in Rifle Accident Near Clare

George Strange 13, son of Clare County Prosecuting Attorney Alexander Strange, died after a jammed rifle discharged while two youths tested shells in a shed. The incident occurred about 11 00 near the Strange home. George, a Harrison Community Schools student, was handling firearms with a neighborly youth and died en route to care. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, a younger brother, and was born in Munich while his parents served with the U S Air Force. The body was taken to Stephenson Funeral Home with services at the Harrison Congregational Church and burial in Harrison Cemetery.

Clare Public Schools Names New High School Principal

Clare Public Schools announced the appointment of Gerald Manville as high school principal, succeeding Marvin Bidstrup who was granted a contract release. Manville, who has led high schools in Bloomingdale and Morrice, holds an MSU degree and has taught before moving into administration. He and his wife have four children.

Early Hartman Pioneer of Clare County Chronicles

Can Watch Field Tiling Demonstration At Haines Farm
