Control methods for poultry lice and mites on farm birds

Michigan State College expert DCG Card outlines inexpensive, practical treatments for lice and mites. Perches can be treated with 40 percent nicotine sulfate, one ounce covering about thirty feet, with a second application after fourteen days to target newly hatched pests. When feather mites are present, repeat three times every three days. Do not apply nicotine sulfate in freezing coop temperatures. Lice dusting treats birds individually with pyrethrum powders, repeated after fourteen days. Mites require coop-focused control using spraying with stock dip, creosote solutions, lime-sulphur or oils. a cheap effective spray is crankcase oil and kerosene mixed equally, which may stain white feathers but lasts longer and requires fewer applications.
