New Wonder Drug Streptomycin From Soil Fungi
Streptomycin, a sister drug to penicillin, is used in army hospitals for urinary and other infections caused by gram negative bacteria not responsive to penicillin. The drug requires large field production from a soil fungus grown under strict lab conditions, limiting output. Wartime priorities boosted penicillin and reduced supplies, and now streptomycin faces similar constraints though industry works to meet demand. The army mainly uses it for severely injured soldiers with urinary tract infections and some meningitis cases.
