Mrs. Ella Buck Passes in Hale Community

Mrs. Ella Amelia Buck longtime Hale resident dies at 81 years in Clare where she had lived with daughter Vera Peterson. Born October 14 1864 in North Plains township Ionia county she married Henry R Buck in 1888 and raised three children. She helped found Hale Baptist Church and remained active in faith and family until her passing July 27 with grandson Raymond Dafoe among those mourning.

Clare Women Beat Ithaca in Inter-club Match

Clare Women golfers defeated Ithaca women 5 to 2 in seven foursomes. Twenty six Clare players travelled for the match. Clara Titus and Fran Andreson led with 49, Titus winning on a tie break. Ithaca’s Mary Brewer carded 45 for top Ithaca score.

John Underwood's Brother Dies in Oil Well Accident

Austie Curtis Underwood 61 died when part of a drilling rig fell during work on a well near McCamey Texas He was born July 1885 in Doddridge County West Virginia He moved to Texas after his first wife Jessie Gorby died and had a son Harry Underwood born in Painesville Ohio Survived by second wife Jewel Underwood two brothers John of Glare and C E of Morgansville He was laid to rest July 21 in Center Point West Virginia

Michigan Fire Toll Rises to 208 in 1945 Losses

Michigan recorded 208 deaths and a total fire loss of 19.55 million dollars in 1945, up 15 lives and about 200 thousand dollars from 1944. Major blazes included Muskegon on March 16 and Detroit’s Export Box and Sealey Co. fire on August 13, with 49 percent of victims under 15.

Cars Collide at Seventh and Pine Injuring Mrs Osborn

Late Wednesday, cars driven by D W Osborn and Tim Frey crashed at Seventh and Pine as Frey, momentarily blinded by a late gun sight, failed to see Osborn across the intersection. Mrs Osborn suffered bruises to the right elbow and arm. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage but drove away.

Young Folks Bicycle 689 Mile Wisconsin Trip

Edmund Burdo and his friends from Clare and Chicago completed a 689 mile cycling journey through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Wisconsin. They spent ten days averaging eighteen miles per hour on straightaways and eight miles daily, visiting St Ignace Marquette the homes of Eds uncles at Lanse Iron Mountain Green Bay Sturgeon Bay and Kewanee Wisconsin, crossing Lake Michigan by ferry to Ludington. They found the trip tiring at first but enjoyable after catching their second wind.

Rosebush Mourns Pioneer Mrs Johnston at 90

Rosebush loses pioneer Margaret Ann Cameron Johnston aged ninety three weeks after a long illness. Born in Ailsa Craig Ontario on July 2 1856 she and her husband William J Johnston settled near Rosebush and later moved to town. Surviving are daughter Mrs Frank White Marion son Melvin Marion son Dean Ludington four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral held July 26 at Rosebush Methodist Church with Rev R O Thomson.

Mort Gallagher who started in hardware and farm implement trade decades ago in Clare closed his Central Motor Sales sale on July 18 marking retirement. He helped establish Clare Hardware and Furniture, owned shares in prior firms, built the Central Motor Sales building in 1928 and sold Dodge and Plymouth cars. Friends wish him well as he steps back from a life spanning horse and buggy days to automotives.

Barn on John Brief Farm Saved by Rural Truck

A burning straw stack near the John Brief farm in Vernon was extinguished with no serious damage after Clare rural fire truck arrived fifteen minutes after the alarm. The fire, noticed by Ray and Mrs. Denton, caused only a blackened corner of the barn. Fire officials credit prompt rural truck response for saving farms in the Clare area. The same day, Clare firemen were summoned to the John Jackson home on West Seventh Street where a closet fire in the living room was extinguished by Irwin Schlegel before the department arrived.

Former Teacher Explains Police Woman Duties in Lansing

Soil Conservation Plans Expand Across Michigan Farms

R G Hill executive secretary of the State Soil Conservation Committee says surveys show 85 percent of Michigan farmland needs soil and water conservation. Michigan has 36 districts covering about 75 000 of 196 000 farms with 4 000 farmers already receiving plans. Demonstrations and tours promote approved methods as districts are farmer operated with five directors each. W R Trellis district supervisor will visit Clare County the week of August 26 to organize demonstration farms and recruit interested farmers.
