The convention moves toward a May 12 closing date. On second reading many measures passed as on first reading. The measure raises the property tax millage ten to eighteen, funds highways, schools, and local units, and allows counties to adopt merit systems and extended borrowing for operations. Eminent domain remains unsettled with a decision expected this week.
Isabella County plans a May 5 Clean Up Day sponsored by the Safety Council. Bud Hubbell chairs with area leaders in Weidman Beal City Rosebush Shepherd and Blanchard, enlisting service clubs scouts and 4H groups to collect roadside litter using county trucks. The effort aims to improve safety and beauty amid rising throw-away bottle litter and potential tire blowouts.
Irish Senator Sean Brady has declined a Clare County invitation to be the Michigan Week guest. Local organizers say the idea remains viable as they seek another Irish guest to accept the complimentary $495 air trip and free hotel stay, with support from Senator Phil Hart and the Irish embassy in Washington.
The Loomis Missionary Church will hold a groundbreaking Sunday April 29 at 11 15 for a new building on Old US 10 Loomis. Occupancy is planned for late fall. The current church was built in 1935 by Rev J Wesley Teale who started the work. Rev E J Belella is the present pastor leading the ceremony. The public is invited.
Clare Postmaster Larry Jack announced that starting April 30 mail will be dispatched from the Clare Post Office at 11 00 a m an advance of about one hour. Mail must be at the post office by 10 30 a m to allow clerks to sort and bag before the 11 00 a m truck departure. The schedule change aims to speed deliveries as far south as Columbus Ohio with next day service for first class mail.
Michigan State University studied about 120 farm families to analyze monthly income and expenditures. The average family had 5.28 members, with total income averaging 7776 dollars and total expenditures of 4924 dollars, 3826 for basic items and 1748 for food. Effects of family size outpaced income changes.
The Pioneers lost after three non conference wins over Mt Pleasant Cole man and Sacred Heart. Coach Bob McDaniel said lax play and errors cost the game versus St Louis on April 23. Clare defeated by St Louis 3-2. Starting lineup included Kozicki Green Kegg Murphy Ruark Warner Russell Breen. McDaniel noted Mid Michigan B Conference format with northern and southern teams meeting on neutral ground for the title.
The Clare County Board of Supervisors planning commission and interested parties will meet Friday May 4 at 8 00 p m in the courthouse Harrison to discuss new platting and building requirements. Builders and developers are invited to bring copies of their requirements.
Clare Chamber of Commerce launches Lake Shamrock Day on Saturday May 5 urging merchants to offer special bargains and posters to tout the civic achievement. The event will start at 10 00 a m with the closing of the dike to allow water from the Tobacco river to bypass the new dam, drawing crowds and boosting business prospects.
Nomination petitions to appear on the June 11 1962 Farwell Area School District No 7 ballot must be filed with the Secretary of the Board William Fischer or the Board of Education office by 4 00 p m May 12 1962. Each petition must carry 50 qualified electors and no signer may back more than two petitions. Incumbents Raymond Agile and Kenneth Kapplinger have not stated plans to seek reelection.
Clare High School adds golf with coach Raymond guiding a four man Pioneer team. In the opener at Ithaca Golf Course Clare lost 614 to 5144 to Ithaca. lineup included Tom Cain Jim Allen Mike Haley and Denny Calkins. May 18 sets Mt Pleasant match and May 22 rematch with Ithaca. May 25 conference championship at Ithaca Country Club.
Janet Walter a Clare High School junior was named one of 18 winners in the 20th annual Christmas Seal TB Speaking project. Her speech Wanted earned honorable mention after a radio broadcast. teacher-advisor Mrs. Ida Reath Long. State judges included Mrs. A B Gwinn John Cook and Theodore J Werle.
The Farwell Labor Day Committee invites churches lodges and civic groups to send representatives to a town hall meeting to decide if local groups will manage concessions at the annual celebration. The open letter says there is insufficient interest in the midway to justify ongoing policy.
The Seiter Brothers host a two day open house to unveil their expanded West Fifth street complex across from Kraft Foods. Visitors can tour the furnace factory based facility now enlarged with new sheds and showroom displays, view millwork operations, and see demonstrations in building materials with free prizes and refreshments. Sellers promote reduced prices and new products including wood paneling hardware and decorative paints as part of their “There’s A Material Difference” slogan.
New field day on May 3 at the Oliver and Robert Mueller farm near Britton Lenawee County showcases latest mini mum tillage methods for corn. MSU specialists plan plowing seed bed prep fertilizing weed control and planting 40 acres in one day with sponsor support from MSU departments and Extension Service.
