Urgent Fire Prevention Alert for Clare Spring Dry Grass

The Clare Fire Department reports repeated grass fires this week as snow melts and dry grass becomes energy fuel. Several fires threatened homes and buildings on McEwan Street First Street South McEwan Street and near Marble Auto Collision Service and residences. A rubbish burner fire caused damage to a storage building at Frank Crigier home with losses estimated at 200 to 300 dollars and contents about 500 dollars. Fire officials urge complete extinguishment of any fire and caution against smoking in grassy areas.

Legion Junior Baseball Club Planned For Local Area

An American Legion Junior Baseball Club is being formed with Ford Motor Company backing through local dealer Dan McDonald. If organized the club would join a league with Clare Mt Pleasant Midland and Alma teams to keep youths under eighteen engaged and steer them away from delinquency. Babe Ruth is a board member of the affiliated national organization, with many pro players having started in the program.

Little June Holt Injured After Bike Fall

Seven year old June Holt daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Holt was seriously bruised when she fell from a bicycle while playing near home Monday evening. She reached home dazed and bleeding, had facial and finger abrasions treated by Dr. H J Ballard and is recovering at home with no bones broken.

DeMolay Chapter Planned In Local Area

Worshipful Master James Gillespie announced plans to form a local Order of DeMolay with Douglas Massen active in organizing. Open to boys aged 14 to 21, the chapter seeks 25 members to secure a charter, with Midland as the nearest existing chapter and jurisdiction covering nearby towns. A girls’ affiliate may follow with Zenobia Chapter No. 129 of the Order of Eastern Star.

Mt Pleasant School Superintendent Tells of Vocation Program

Mt Pleasant school superintendent Charles Parks described a plan to help high school age youths choose vocations and prepare for jobs. He urged expanding the local counseling clinic with aptitude testing on the job experiences and talks by professionals guided by educators and civic leaders. Grand Rapids salesman robbed claims he was robbed

Jay Snow, a Grand Rapids salesman, was found unconscious in Clare Hospital after two men brought him in. He later said he was robbed of 300 and had gone next door for a beer. He recovered and was discharged next morning. Police inquiries found no prior complaint.

Michigan, responding to Nassau County New York, requests 40,000 vials of smallpox vaccine to curb an outbreak. Clare P. T. A. April Meeting Planned for Monday

The Clare P. T. A. will hold its April meeting next Monday evening the 21st at the Clare school. A short business session will precede a program arranged by the finance committee featuring declamations musical numbers and a fifth grade skit. Local Jewelers Attend Meetings in Grand Rapids

Howard M. Everts and Jack B. Cook attended the Michigan Horological Association convention in Grand Rapids on Sunday. The group backed Senate Bill 170 to license watchmakers for public protection. Everts and Cook then attended the Michigan Retail Jewelers Association meeting Monday and Tuesday, and Mr. and Mrs. Everts joined the Golden Jubilee banquet at the Rowe Hotel served at 7:00 PM.

Six Year Old Fatally Injured in Road Accident

A six year old boy, David Walters of the Robert Shull Ranch, died after running into a speeding Studebaker on US-27 seven miles north of Clare. Lloyd Keyser, 20, swerved to avoid the child then back to the right to avoid an oncoming car. the boy struck the car and died at 4:10 PM. Three other incidents are noted, including a crash near Rosebush village and injuries to Gerald Chapple and Ernest Hail in separate collisions.
