Bond Boosters Rally Sets Sales Record at Winterfield Town Hall
Busy week culminates in a War Savings Bond and Stamp sale at Frost town hall with Master of Ceremonies Harley Holt opening by leading the audience in the national anthem. Speakers include Omer Parente Civilian Defense Eva Schlaffey Food for Freedom George Lehr Salvage Miss Iona Bowlen and Leo Russell. Jimmie Gillespie performed on concertina and the Salvage group led by Lehr won the games using a traveling cup. The total for the evening reached 646000 in stamps and bonds. The Mann Siding School hosted an open house for the Bond Boosters last Friday April 16 with a large crowd and a Star Spangled Banner singalong. Harley Holt announced club members and topics Civilian Defense Salvage Food for Freedom Stamps and Bonds and Cooperation. A soldier’s poem We swoop at Dawn was read by William Hileman.

With the Second War Loan drive ending April 30 1943 Clare county has sold 10890150 in War Savings Bonds leaving 5101 09850 to reach the quota. County Chair Donald E B Holbrook told the County Board and City Council that $15000 and 10360 respectively were invested. 2nd Lt. Neil D. Maxwell of Clare serves in the 22nd Troop Carrier Squadron which received a presidential citation for actions from September 19, 1942 to December 22, 1942. Telegrams from families report Pvt. Mervin M Robinette missing after enemy action in the North Atlantic on February 2 1943 with word of his presumed death. Sgt Stanley Nelson reported dead and buried after being missing since January 5. he was a 126th Infantry graduate of Barryton High School. Lt Fred Welling, nephew of Mr and Mrs E Chaffee, missing in action during a mission with Lt Tom Harmon after their plane went down in South American jungles. Former Clare Boy Honored At Ship Launching
The article honors Robert Lee Pettit radioman first class of the US Navy, killed in action December 27, 1941 near Jolo Harbor Philippines. Pettit was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. His widow Esther Pettit of Honolulu, a Korean American with ties to Dr. Y. C. Yang, attended as sponsor at the Houston ship launch for the destroyer named USS Pettit.
