Aged Pioneer Ferdinand Giebel Passes in Clare

Ferdinand Giebel born May 8 1852 in Pommern Germany died April 7 1981 at home east of Clare after a short illness. He married Fredericka Breitag in Detroit and moved to Clare County in 1883. Survived by wife two daughters Anna Burch Frieda son Fred ten grandchildren two great grandchildren siblings and many relatives. Services at St John s Lutheran Church were held April 11 with burial at Cherry Grove.

Mt Pleasant high school hosted a regional speech contest with ten schools. Lyle Allen placed second in Declamation with Toussaint L Ouverture and four points while first went to Mr Pleasant with five. Elizabeth Deller tied for first in Oratorical with Modern Divorce and Harrison. a runoff will decide the district berth.

Elmer Bruckart Burned While Fishing Near Houghton Lake

Elmer Bruckart was badly burned on the face neck and hands while pumping up a gasoline torch during fishing between Houghton and Higgins Lake. The torch sprayed gasoline as the air valve failed before ignition, setting his face and neck alight. he endured pain but resumed work the next morning.

The Clare high school baseball schedule starts Thursday April 23 against Evart. Coach Alldread, with only two returning players, aims to build a competitive team. Games begin at 8:30 each night, with matches at home or away through May 29 including Reed City Coleman Midland and Hvart.

Flood Wins Chancery Suit Over Oil Leases

Judge Ray Hart ruled in favor of Peter Flood Vernon township land owner allowing withdrawal from a contract and dismissed a cross claim by Edmund F. Johnston to enforce the contract. The decision hinged on fraud claims but the court did not rule on that issue. The verdict drew hundreds of observers as talks of appeal to the state Supreme Court began.

J A Jackson Home Robbed While Family At Church

Sunday morning the home of J A Jackson on west Seventh street was entered while the family attended church. A pocketbook with a driver's license and papers, plus a wrist watch gift from Mrs Irwin Schlegel, were taken. Monday the license and papers were found torn at City Hall leading officials to suspect juvenile culprits amid similar recent pranks.

Wool Pool To Be Handled By Local Co op

Arrangements with Harvey Dawson of the Co op Shipping Association move local wool growers toward pooling with state and national wool marketing bodies. The 1930 pool covered 38 percent of the national clip and reduced price fluctuations. 14 cents paid for good wool on delivery, with balance after grading. Michigan and Indiana wool will pool at Fort Wayne. about 60 percent of 1931 clip to be sold through the National Wool Marketing Association. The Boston buyer will stop direct purchases, handling pool wool only.

Life Sketch of Henry L. Green

Henry L. Green born December 30 1865 near Plain City Ohio died April 7 1938 aged 65 years 3 months 8 days. He moved to Clare Michigan in 1914 and lived there until his death. He married Etta D Patch February 22 1888 and had five children four sons and a daughter who died in 1925. Funeral services were held at Lake Michigan conducted by Rev EB Smith.

Inmate Clark Smedley Dies by Suicide at County Infirmary

Clark Smedley aged 48 an inmate at the County Infirmary committed death by his own action by ingesting carbolic acid last Monday. He was found in great pain by Mrs. Hugh Henderson Matron and died twenty eight minutes later after attempts at first aid and a physician. He formerly lived near Lake George.

Esteemed Clare businessman dies Tuesday

Fred Newsom, a respected Clare merchant connected with Big Tire and Vulcanizing Shop, died Tuesday around noon at his East State Street home after a period of poor health. He drove home saying he was sleepy. medical help failed to revive him. Services were held at his home and he was buried in Charlotte. His daughter in law Mrs. Glenn Newsom arrived shortly before his death to assist. A life sketch will appear next week.

Banquet Attracts Large Attendance Of Epworth League

The Ep worth League banquet at the Methodist church Tuesday evening drew many young people, extra tables were added at the last moment. Anna Mae Smalley arranged the menu and program, while Mrs. Wm. Gorcon provided decorations. The youth delivered toasts and program numbers with notable talent and credit. Mrs. Lampman gave a fitting closing talk.

Mrs Augusta Crum Succumbs At Home Near Winn

Augusta Crum nee Richardson died at home near Winn on Saturday April 11 1931 at age 69 years 5 months 18 days. She was born in Fostoria Ohio October 28 1861 and lived most of her life in Michigan. She married Robert Henderson in 1879 he died 1891 and married Mahlon Crum in 1893 he died 1917. Survived by five children seven grandchildren one sister Carrie of Montpelier Ohio and one brother Delbert of Detroit. Funeral Tuesday at Winn church with interment at Union Cemetery. Northern State Sanatorium Malt Tax Move Gains Momentum

Legislative leaders report rising support for a malt tax bill to fund the Northern State Sanatorium. Senate approval was 28 to 4 and pending House action with Governor Brucker’s stance uncertain. Revenue through July 1, 1982 funds county sanatoriums and $400,000 is set for construction and equipment.

Fire Department Holds Annual Meet and Elections

The city fire department met Monday evening with full membership. Chief C A Wellman resigned after 18 years of service and five years as chief. Albert Haley was recommended as new chief with John Groves as Asst Chief and Oise Derby as Secy Treas. Other officers were appointed including Captain Chemical Allen Crum and Captain Hose James Clute. Albert Thurston became regular to fill Haley’s vacancy.

Clare Chamber of Commerce Hosts Lady Night and Bürger Program

A large Clare crowd attended a Monday Chamber meeting with sixty seven seated at special tables arranged by Mrs. Barnes and served a ham meal. Deputy Geeck and Anderson organized attendance, and delegates featured a baritone solo by B. A. Throop. Paul Gibson announced a potato car event for April 17 with State College speakers, while Frank D. Fitzgerald spoke on state government and highways.
