Glenda Warner Tops Finalists In Speech Test
Glenda Warner won the speech contest at Clare High School as part of the United Nations pilgrimage finalists. Sylvia Brooks finished as runner up with other finalists including Bill Mogg Randy Martin Wendy Hillebrand and Patsy Schlafley noting Michigan will field a statewide UN bus with about 40 participants. The annual pilgrimage enters its 50th year dedicated to Judge Edward M. Sharpe of Bay City.

Clare High School Bands Spring Concert Set
The Clare High School Reserve and Symphonic Bands present their Spring Concert on Wednesday April 16 at 8 p.m. in the high school gym. Both bands earned first division ratings at the district festival and advance to the State Band Festival in Lansing on April 26. The varied program includes festival selections and pieces such as Caucasian Passacaglia Blue Tango Peanut Vendor Man From La Mancha America The Beautiful among others. Admission is 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for students.

Windstorm damages homes near Loomis in Wise township
A violent windstorm struck near Loomis causing damage to homes and utilities. Neighbors report roof and window damage at Defoys 10330 N Shepherd Rd, downed power lines, and a fallen pine near Mrs. Smith’s residence. Longstreths report an awning torn away and garage roof board blown off with a car damaged.

The Clare Jaycee Auxiliary hosted the District 5 spring meeting April 9 in the Clare School multipurpose room. Fifty-eight registered from Detroit area towns and cities. Patti Lance and Lee Formicola were special guests with state officers to be elected May 9 and 10 in Lansing. Nora Kennedy chaired. Myra Comer presided with officers Candace Gordon, Wanda Bailey and Sharon Russell.

Screening Children For Eye and Ear Defects
Health District Seven will offer vision and hearing screening for preschool children in area elementary schools this spring in cooperation with Michigan Department of Public Health. The tests run in late April to May at no cost to families. Parents of three and a half to five year olds who did not receive mail information should contact the Gladwin Health Department or call 426-9431 for appointment notices sent a week before the screening.

Isabella Man Dies In Fire Near Mt Pleasant
James Swindlehurst an 87 year old Isabella county resident died Monday night when a fire destroyed his home three miles north of Mt Pleasant. Firefighters from Rosebush Isabella Sheriff’s Department and Mt Pleas ant Fire Department found the victim in an upstairs bedroom and pronounced death from suffocation. Clothing was burned from his body and signs suggested he may have been smoking in bed.

Eight Hobo Riders Arrested After Unauthorized Boxcar Trip
Eight youths hitchhiked a boxcar Sunday with six charged as disorderly persons and two authorities jailed for possessing marihuana. Anthony Tucker 19 and Dan Wilk 20 were held at Harrison on $3000 bond. Clare Sheriff Datels described the group harshly and a professor from Eastern Michigan University attended the court appearance.
