The Clare Rod and Gun club banquet at City Hall Tuesday featured welcome from Mayor Jess Hampton and praise for Secretary-Treasurer Henry E. Doll. Doll’s report showed 1,200,000 fish planted and 360 pheasants released near Clare Bird Sanctuary. Speakers included Robert Fortney of Paris and Merton McClure of the Conservation Department.

Arthur Schoonover Dies Sudden at Vernon Hill Home
Arthur Dickerson Schoonover born August 25 1862 in Wilkes Barre Pa died suddenly at his Vernon Hill home on Monday April 12 at age 74. He worked in Michigan lumber camps and log drives and served the public as a carpenter around Clare. Survived by wife Lydia later wife Elizabeth Northup two sons Harry and Devere a daughter Ida Krell a step daughter Icel Stilgenbauer seven grandchildren and many friends. Funeral Thursday at 2:00 p.m. with Rev George P Stanford officiating at Cherry Grove Cemetery.

James F Tatman Dies in Clare County at 80
James Finley Tatman longtime Clare County resident died April 9 at his West High Street home after a stroke. Born March 25 1859 in Nicholsville Ohio he lived in Indiana before moving to Clare in 1882. He worked in groceries built the Tatman Building and was active in education church Red Cross and business groups. Surviving are three children two sisters two brothers and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held April 12 at Thurstons Funeral Home with several out of town attendees.

Larson Receives Two to Fifteen Year Murder Sentence
A special Harris on Circuit Court session led Judge Ray Hart to sentence Joseph Larson to Jackson prison for two to fifteen years after Larson pled guilty to the least murder count. Prosecutor Holbrook had charged first and second degree murder and manslaughter in the case involving Fred Schug. Larson claimed self defense. Mrs. Larson testified to coercion. Sheriff Bates escorted Larson to Jackson for confinement.

Oil News Vernon Field Advances Drilling Depths
After engine troubles, Chartiers Currie No. 2 on the south side of section 6 is now working smoothly at 8300 feet. Workmen on Gape No. 1 on the east side of section 9 are rigging a derrick and expect to drill by week’s end.
Drillers Near Completion on Murphy No 1 and Currie No 2
The Murphy No 1 well on the aft side of section 6 has reached 3383 feet. The Currie No 2 well is also expected to be completed next week.
Six New Members Join Clare County Board of Supervisors
The Clare County Board of Supervisors welcomed six new members after spring elections. New Clare City members are John W. Dunlop John Rodabaugh and Arden Walters. John Burnett of Greenwood was elected chairman. Judge A H E Wylie granted authority to appoint a probate register, Estella White receiving the post without additional county expense after assisting in the probate office for two years. Since January first forty five estate cases have been handled by the probate judge there. A register of probate is required in larger counties and optional in smaller ones if work demands.

Trunkline Maintenance Workers Get Immediate Wage Increase
State Highway Commissioner Murray D. Van Wagoner ordered an immediate wage raise for trunkline maintenance workers. The measure raises the maintenance wage by 5 cents an hour and sets a new minimum at 50 cents an hour, up from 35 cents.

Former Clare Editor Enoch Andrus Dies at 91
Enoch Andrus, longtime editor of The Clare Sentinel, died last Saturday night at Clark Memorial Home in Grand Rapids at age 91. Funeral services were held Tuesday with burial in Hastings, his boyhood home. Andrus left Clare about fifteen years ago to retire from active business interests.
