Minnie Albertson Carpenter dies at 41 in Harrison

Minnie Albertson Carpenter born September 21 1886 at Lake View Michigan died in Harrison on March 30 1927 aged forty one years six months and nine days. She lived in Brinton Pennock Siding and Harrison where she ran a variety store and helped in her husband Ben Carpenter's business. She served on the Harrison Board of Education and belonged to the Congregational church Ladies Auxiliary and the Zeeland Club. Survived by husband three sons Allan Ralph Eugene her parents Mr and Mrs John Albertson of Ewart four brothers and two sisters. Funeral held April 2 at the Congregational church with Rev H B Johnson officiating. Burial Maple Grove Cemetery.

Congregational Church Men to Serve Pancakes

The Congregational church men plan a pancake supper in the church dining room next Tuesday evening April 19. They promise unlimited pancakes with butter and maple syrup, home made sausage and coffee. Attendees may arrive between 5:30 and 9:00 PM, bring fifty cents, and no formal dress is required.

Firemen Hold Annual Election and Plans

Members of the City Fire Department met for their annual meeting electing A Wellman as chief again. John Forbes was named Assistant Chief with O A Derby as Secretary Treasurer. Wm Lange captained Hose and O Al Derby led Ladders and Chemical. A district inspection tour on McEwan Street is set for April 27 followed by plans for a larger field day in August.

Good Literature Club Sees April Meeting Held at Caul Home

The Good Literature Club met Tuesday evening April 5 at Mrs. Minnie Caul’s home. President Mrs. Clara Sternaman opened, with Mrs. Susie Foell as chairman. Bernice Jones spoke on The Life and Works of Barrie, followed by Evans’ illustrations and Ehrhardt’s piano selections. The next meeting is scheduled for April 19 at Mrs. Adelaide Widen’s home.

Zinn Resigns as Clare Superintendent for Marshall High Principal Post

Clare Board of Education accepted the resignation of Superintendent W Roger Zinn at a special Wednesday meeting. He said he has been offered Marshall High School principal in Michigan with a higher salary. The board had not yet acted on his successor.

Delegation Seeks New M-14 Route West of Houghton and Higgins Lakes

A regional delegation from Isabella Roscommon Missaukee and Crawford counties pressed Lansing officials for rerouting and constructing the state trunk line M-14 on the west side of Houghton and Higgins lakes. The plan, already approved by federal authorities, would shorten Lansing Grayling travel by 12 to 14 miles with minimal engineering issues. Roscommon county has already built seven and a half miles parallel to the route at $20,000 partly donated. The Administrative Board referred the request to the Highway committee. Representatives included T Carl Holbrook John Asline and L Hf Thompson from Clare.

Civil War veteran Sidney Dave dies at 83 in Flint

Sidney Dave, born May 20 1843 in Port Huron Michigan, died April 7 1927 at 83. Enlisted 1862 in Co B 22nd Michigan Infantry, captured at Chickamauga, imprisoned 14 12 months, paroled 1864, served until June 1865. Survived by two daughters and two grandchildren, with moves from Lake Clare County to Grand Rapids and Flint to live with a daughter.

Rosebush Church Meeting A Success

The Rosebush Methodist church hosted the Third Quarterly Conference with 43 members and officials attending dinner. Rev. Dr S Wheeler of Big Rapids opened the meeting and Rev My H Reusch of Mt Pleasant spoke on The Business of Missions highlighting missionary work as a global enterprise. Dr Wheeler then spoke on the financial aspect of missions in the local church and district. The conference concluded with a brief business session, noting the church’s prosperous condition and hopeful outlook.

Forest fire fighting truck demonstration in Clare district

A Michigan Conservation Department forest fire division truck showed its equipment in Clare en route to Gaylord. Chief Charles Peterson and District Warden James McKeath led the demonstration, detailing 290 gallons of water capacity, hoses, pumps, and a portable motor pump for rapid use by six Gaylord wardens.

Akey Couple Fetes Golden Anniversary With Friends

About fifty gathered at Mr and Mrs Peter Akeys home on April 8 to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Guests included distant relatives from Flint Mt Pleasant and Vernon Hill with toasts led by Mrs M Buckley. The couple married April 9 1877 in Tweed Ontario and later moved to Michigan where they raised two sons and three grandchildren.

Resigning Pastor Rev Leonhard Bernthal Accepts Beaver Dam Call

Rev Leonhard C Bernthal, pastor of St John s Lutheran Church for four and a half years, announced his resignation to take effect May 1. He has accepted a call to the Lutheran church at Beaver Dam Wisconsin for a larger congregation and higher salary. His new home will be about forty miles from the city where his parents reside. Since coming to Michigan he has led congregations in Saginaw St Louis Alma and Clare. The Bernthals leave many friends but look forward to the promotion.

Clare County Supervisors Hold Short Organizational Session

The Clare County Board of Supervisors met at the Courthouse for organization. Reginald Sharpe was re elected chairman by unanimous vote and Mayor L H Thompson was named chairman of the equalization committee. Emergency highway projects were approved with estimated costs. The sink hole east of Harrison will be filled at about 800 dollars. The north Temple road washout will be repaired at an estimated cost of 5806. A $2500 appropriation was approved for the county garage and storage warehouse at Clare.

Ladies of Congregational church conduct reverent service

The Congregational church last Sunday yielded a dignified service led by its ladies. Music was excellent and papers on Christs Triumphal Entry were well written. The group plans to lead worship again when Marceling is improved, as stated by Shumway and Rogers.
