Quiet Monday Election Yields Tiny Clare Turnout

Clare voters cast only 287 ballots as Mayor Lewis H. Thompson seeks a sixth term. Alex McKinnon won city clerk over Edward White, and Ralph Stevens narrowly led for Supervisor in the first ward. Second ward results show Thompson leading for Mayor and McKinnon prevailing for Clerk with close races for Treasurer and Alderman.

Mrs Cole Nurse 57 Dies After Maiden Fight With Death

Carrie A. Cole 57 a registered nurse died at Memorial hospital Friday after a December illness that led to an arm amputation. She trained at Memorial hospital and was highly regarded for her skill and devotion. Born in Genesee county February 28 1869 she later lived in Clare county and Nebraska before settling in the area. Surviving are her mother three brothers and a sister. Funeral at 2100 hours Monday at 416 North Water Street with Rev T Twyson Jones officiating. Burial in Oak Hill cemetery.

Clare Boy Scouts Clean Up Alleys in Town Action

Clare Boy Scouts led by Scoutmaster Earl Sternaman cleaned alleys behind Fourth and Fifth streets. They collected papers and rubbish, improving the area between business blocks and encouraging merchants to maintain tidiness. Eagles to Fox patrols and leaders named, with participation from Mussell Montgomery Comer and Waite, Holmes, Gillis, Updegrove.

William B Hodson Dies After Long Illness in Michigan

William Byron Hodson of Isabella county died March 28 1927 at University Hospital Ann Arbor after a long illness. He married Catherine Walton November 22 1904 at Seaton Michigan. eight children Eva Edna Beatrice Arthur Barbara Hilda May Grace and Albert survive. He joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Owens October 1 1924. Services were held at his Vernon home and Rosebush Methodist church with Rev Leroy Whitney officiating. Burial followed in Rosebush cemetery.

Miss Martha Jones of Michigan shares an extraordinary letter from Miss Belle Castle of Chungking China recounting eleven years as head of a Methodist Episcopal girls high school in Chungking. The letter dated Shanghai March 4 1927 describes leaving Suechuan travel by ship under U S Navy gunboat orders and plans to return via London New York with hope to reach Michigan by mid May.
