Eighteen Convicted for State Fire Regulation Violations
Eighteen persons in downstate Michigan counties were convicted for careless grass and brush fires violating state fire laws. Joseph Cooper of Muskegon received 90 days in jail for a $100 fine after a fire causing a $20,000 loss. A Tuscola county resident was fined $100 for a fire burning over 600 acres. Courts in ten counties have imposed similar penalties with total fines over $500. The fires burned more than 13,000 acres in the week of March 26, prompting stronger enforcement by the state conservation department.

Clare Rotarians Meet at Barnes Cafe on Wednesdays
The Clare Rotary Club will gather in Barnes cafe private dining room each Wednesday noon for lunch at 12 and a program. Claude L. Smith Dies Suddenly at Loomis Home
Claude LeRoy Smith a longtime Loomis resident died suddenly Sunday afternoon at his home after a heart attack while visiting with a friend. He was 72 years old, born October 1 1873 in Bath Michigan and married Millie McKibben in 1897. He served as Loomis school director and was active in public affairs. He leaves a brother Charles and four sisters plus many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at Loomis Missionary Church with interment in Loomis cemetery.

Clare High School speakers dominated the District Speech Contest at Coleman winning two firsts and three seconds across four events. Locals Phyllis Ogle Pat Hall Bob Samborn Jeannette Rube led the state bid with top finishes. Great Lakes Greyhound Lines acquires the Foster Bus Line certificate running Lansing to Clare. The Greyhound Company will start operations April 20 under President Manford Burleigh. Mrs. Dorothy Dysinger of Ann Arbor reported to have lost her husband Staff Sergeant Rolland Dysinger in action on March 24 1945 in Germany. Born in Clare Michigan March 28 1917 he enlisted April 6 1941 and trained at camps Custer Forrest Robison and Fort Sheridan. He served in Iceland Scotland England Ireland France and Germany and married Dorothy Seybold on December 7 1941. He leaves a wife and parents three brothers and a sister with his brother Vern already dead in France.

Clare Firemen Save Big Barns On Brand Farm
Clare Fire Department and volunteers saved two large barns and a poultry house on the Brand Farm near Clare when a fire destroyed two corn cribs a hog house a woodshed and a small chicken coop. Water supply was scarce and neighbors brought water in milk cans to aid the booster tank, enabling firefighters to protect the main structures. The property is owned by Mrs. Dewitt of Saginaw and the Shulls.
