Early Clare Pioneer Ella Shaver Brought Home for Burial

Mrs. Ella Shaver, a Clare pioneer, died in Grand Rapids on April 3 after wintering at a soldiers home. Her funeral was held at 1:00 PM at her Clare home with Rev. H. B. Johnson. interment followed beside her husband in Cherry Grove cemetery. Born next September at 75, she married A. A. Shaver in Gratiot county, moved to Clare, helped start a Sunday school, and was a charter Congregational church member and choir leader.

The opening banquet on May 12 honors Mr and Mrs Doherty with Clare Chamber of Commerce hosting a 150 guest event. Midland Young Man Narrowly Escapes Death

George Stanford, a Midland youth likely studying at the University of Michigan, nearly died after wearing shoes dyed with toxic aniline dye. He collapsed after noon last Thursday, received blood transfusion and oxygen at a hospital, and left by Tuesday weakened but recovering at home. Local shoe shops were warned to stop using the dye.

Celebrates First Mass in Clare Parish

Fr. James B. Fitzpatrick son of Mr and Mrs Dennis Fitzpatrick of Sheridan township celebrated the first Mass at St Cecilia church last Sunday at 10 in Clare. Fr Geo Flanagan assisted as Deacon and Fr James Flannery was Subdeacon with Bartholomew's Mass in E flat sung by the Sacret Heart church choir. A three course banquet followed at the K of C Club rooms for over 150 friends and relatives. Fitzpatrick will be stationed somewhere in the Detroit diocese.

Clare Wells Going Strong After City Fire

After a Tuesday blaze at the Dr J W Ditaldo block Clare’s water system showed its strength. Five wells operated, the tank rose to capacity, and pumps delivered about 1.5 million gallons in 24 hours while fire crews ran ignition lines and public use added to supply. The city’s water works rely on five six inch wells with a robust pumping record.

State conservation Department notices from Lansing announce higher fees for non residents. A general license costs six dollars or two dollars for a special license, with the general license required to catch bass and trout. Only hook and line fishing is allowed and wardens will arrest violators without permit receipts.
