Fire Damages Clare Block as Dense Smoke Invades Basement

Firemen battled dense smoke for minutes after an alarm at 4:30 PM in Clare. The basement of Dr J W Dunlop’s block flooded with smoke. entry impossible and five water lines kept flames from spreading. Several occupants listed losses and insurance, with Dr Dunlop facing about 30 000 dollars. The blaze likely started in a south basement room and spread to the stair and upper floors.

Last Rites Paid for Thomas W. Brown in Vernon Township

Thomas William Brown died March 24 1924 at his Vernon township home after a lingering illness. Born in New York State he moved to Saginaw then the present home 40 years ago. He married Maggie Eschenbach February 26 1886 and leaves a wife two sisters and other relatives. Funeral March 26 at his home conducted by Rev C A Lohnes Clare, burial at Tarwell Cemetery. Attending from a distance were Andrew Eschenbach Detroit Mrs M Schrems Saginaw and Mrs Wm C Smith Chicago.

Bucket Brigade Prevents Farm Fire in Isabella County

A spark from a chimney started a fire at E. Bergey’s farm in Wise township Isabella county. The family and visitors formed a bucket brigade and quenched the blaze preventing major damage. Estimated loss ranged from 25 to 50 dollars and was fully covered by Clare Realty Company insurance.

Mrs. Harry Terwilliger and her daughter Geneva departed Thursday for a ten day visit with relatives in Alma.

New firm organized in Clare with undertaker and plumbing lines

On March 21 M J Doherty known as Mike marked his 21st birthday by joining his father in a Clare business partnership. The firm will offer undertaking plumbing heating sheet metal and related goods including cave spouting lightning rods water systems and pumps. Mike Doherty aims to complete embalming sanitary science and pharmacy studies at the University of Michigan and will take the state board exam next fall. Watch for their ads in the Clare Sentinel.

Beloved Citizen William Emerson Dies After Suffering

Sunday morning March 28 1924 William Emerson an aged Grant township resident died after long illness. Born Peterboro Ontario May 25 1888 he married Agnes Crossen in 1866 who died in 1914. He leaves two sons Richard Jackson and Edith Emerson, three daughters Mrs A D Hampton Mrs W D Reed and Miss Edith Emerson ten grandchildren. Funeral March 26 at Cherry Grove Cemetery with Rev Bates and Rev M M M conducting services.

Farm Home and Contents Destroyed by Fire

The farm home of Edgar Bower in Arthur township burned last Friday morning around 1:00. The family escaped with their lives. none of the contents were saved and some out-buildings were destroyed. Loss estimated at about 6000 dollars, with 4700 dollars insured through the Aetna Insurance Company via Clare Realty Company. A representative of Aetna adjusted the loss.

Charles Bogue Dies at 82 in Coleman Area

Charles Bogue aged 82 died at his home south of Coleman on Thursday March 20 1924. He was born October 4 1842 in Shiawassee County and served nearly five years in the First Michigan Cavalry as part of the Army of the Potomac. Survived by seven children with one son deceased, he was married to Elizabeth Graham in 1868. Funeral held at the Congregational church in Clare with interment in Cherry Grove Cemetery.

At 11 00 last Thursday evening Dad Smiths Hotel at Houghton Heights caught fire. Care-takers and neighbors saved the hostelry from total destruction. Fire blamed on a defective chimney.
