A legislative clash between Howell and Ann Arbor over hospital funding highlights broader tax debate as lawmakers weigh a 3 cent gas tax with no weight tax reduction. Some back the plan as emergency funding. others oppose hikes without offset cuts. W S Teeter and Joe McGuire report near 1200 acres contracted for beets to supply the Mt Pleasant plant of the Columbia Sugar Co. Bay City and Canada demand shift some districts to Mt Pleasant. With about 7000 acres already spoken for, and plans to ship 400 families to Isabella Clare and Midland counties, the season looks strong.
A benefit dance is planned at the I. C. C. F. hall in Farwell on Friday evening April S for the John Van Buskirk family after their home burned. Music will be provided and attendees are assured of a good time.
The Clare Study Club hosted a Tuesday banquet at Hotel Doherty inviting husbands. Mrs. William H. Caple led, with W. W. Gumser of Lowell delivering a witty yet thoughtful talk on happiness and the pursuit of material ends. Members contributed prayers music and readings to close the evening.
Mildred Alaudia Jones, daughter of Mr and Mrs HE Lloyd Jones, born August 5 1926 in Wayne Michigan, died March 28 1927 at her grandparents home in Vernon township. She leaves parents grandparents A Jones of Midland and J H Ouderkirk and many relatives. Services were held from the Congregational church conducted by Rev Methner Coleman and burial at Cherry Grove.
The notice urges all qualified electors to vote on Monday morning, insisting on casting ballots early in the day.
The March term of Clare County Circuit Court convened in Harrison with Judge Ray Hart presiding. Five defendants pled guilty, five cases were continued, several sentences were imposed including jail terms for prohibition law violations, and remaining cases were deferred to the next term. A separate case involving a jury awarded $125 to Baxter Cartage in an assumpsit appeal. The court adjourned with one chancery case to be completed in Mt Pleasant Friday.
A Midland area farmer Floyd Soper is described in the Midland Republican on March 17 as an egg eater who consumes five dozen eggs daily, with six at breakfast twelve at dinner and six at supper seven days a week, and sometimes more on good appetite days.
The Rosebush churches outline a two week Easter program from April 3 to 17. Visitation Week will have two members visiting each home with invitations to Passion Week services at Center Church each night. Easter Sunday includes sunrise service, Epworth League pageant, baptismal service, and an Easter Cantata at Rosebush with baptisms and reception of members.
Greenville farmer L J Wilson was acquitted by a jury in ten minutes at Stanton after being charged with killing Ted Sixbury during a reported chicken coop robbery. Petitions circulated to free Wilson on the charge. Rev and Mrs Gordon and two children of South Haven are visiting her parents Mr and Mrs HGC Cudney.
Clare fire chief C A Wellman led a Sunday forenoon call to members and assistants to a home birthday dinner for Mike Doherty hosted by Mr and Mrs J E Doherty. Firemen arrived on time and feasted with abundant food, aided by royal hospitality. Attendees included C A Wellman Fred Smalley M D Feighner H B Johnson Albert Haley Willard Bicknell Harvey Etter William Lange Robert Archambault C A Derby John Asline James Chite.
C. C. Ruhle of Coleman is under arrest at Mt. Pleasant charged with obtaining money under false pretenses. He ran automobile agencies in Coleman Mt. Pleasant Flint and worked in Clare through agents. A $55,000 shortage is alleged as finance firms investigated.
On Wednesday morning the Mertz Bidwell variety store passed to new Midland owner R D Gay who will remodel and reorganize the shop and discontinue groceries to feature a full variety department. O Parent of Imlay City leads the store now and plans to relocate his family. Mertz Bidwell has served local patrons for five years, with three years under E S Chaiffee.
Superintendent W Roger Zinn of the Clare Schools will continue in the post for another year after the Board of Education unanimously invited him to stay. Zinn, who joined from Central Lake last year, has proven highly satisfactory in his work.
The Clare Study Club hosted a Michigan Day program at Mrs. B. R. Allen's home with Mrs. Artibee as chair. Mrs. Astine spoke on Michigan Women in Politics while Rev. H. B. Johnson shared Isle Royale travel notes for conservationists.
Students under Mrs. Stella Lampman repair and rebound nearly a thousand library volumes. The books were collected after the old library of 4 000 volumes burned in a former school building fire.
The Catholic Church announces a mission starting Sunday April 3 to renew spiritual fervor. All are welcome, with daily services: Mass at 10 a.m. Sunday and services each evening at 7:30, plus 8 a.m. sessions on weekdays.

Lynden Grandsden of Groat township Gladwin county was found guilty in Gladwin circuit court of larceny. He was fined 100 dollars plus 125 dollars costs and faces one year in Ionia Reformatory if he fails to pay.
Congressman John C. Ketchum of Hastings will deliver the commencement address at Clare this year. He has led the State Grange and lectured for the National Grange and earned a strong record in national affairs. The Baccalaureate will be held Sunday evening June 12 in the high school auditorium. Rev. H. B. Johnson was chosen to deliver the address for the senior class.
The Good Literature Club met at Mrs. Mabel Horton’s home on Tuesday evening March 22 with Mrs. Stella Lampman presiding. Mrs. Marjorie Reeder was named critic, and Mrs. Pauline Zinn read Oscar Wilde’s life and work. Marion Horton played two piano selections and Mrs. Elizabeth Maybee previewed Lady Windemere's Fan. The group adjourned to meet with Mrs. Minnie Caul on April 5.
The M. E. Ladies Aid to host a six o'clock dinner next Wednesday evening April 6 in church parlors. Serves until all are served. Plates 35 cents. Menu includes roast meat mashed potatoes brown gravy creamed carrots cabbage salads bread and butter assorted pies baked beans cookies beet and cucumber pickles cheese coffee.
