Michigan completed the absorption of township roads into county systems on April 1 after 85 years. All 83 counties assume remaining 10,428 miles of township roads out of 62,200 miles originally certified in 1931. The McNitt Act shifted funding to counties, with annual appropriations rising to 4 million dollars, and allowed later inclusion of streets outside recorded plats, affecting industrial counties hardest.

Vernon’s First Oil Well Now Six Years Old
Six years ago Monday March 30 the Bowman No 1 well four miles south of Clare struck oil in the Vernon field. H M Shields held the drilling contract with Jos Slater and Roy O Donal the drillers. The well began as a gusher at about 0 barrels per day and three flows every twenty four hours. The flow dropped to about 60 barrels but has remained a faithful gusher. In six years the well has produced over 135000 barrels of Maid oil and is regarded by many as the best paying well in the field.
