Covington resident COEBEL AT LAST announced his nomination by the Kentucky Democratic Party for the governorship. The former city official campaigns on reform, economy, and education while seeking support from statewide voters and party delegates.
In Louisville on June 27 1900 William Goebel edged General P Watt Hardin and Captain William J Stone on the twenty sixth ballot to secure the Democratic gubernatorial nomination amid a riotous convention. Stone was dropped earlier and Goebel was escorted by a committee as he promised a vigorous campaign and faithful administration. The Hardin Stone faction urged unity but stayed silent after the result.
Louis Lapiner, father of Gerald Lapiner kidnapped and taken to Painesville Ohio, refuses to pay a $2,500 reward. Miss O. C. Ferris and her brother, who located the boy and helped secure his return, arrived in Chicago to testify. They say they received no thanks or compensation and contemplate legal action to recover the reward.
Victor Marara a nine year old inmate of the Good Shepherd Orphanage Louisville drowned at Fern Grove while saving Charles Thompson who ventured beyond depth in Fourteen Mile Creek Thompson called for help and Marara swam with a plank to aid him but sank and died third person died in incident with locals naming the brave victim as Victor Marara and noting the orphanage affiliation
A Toledo Press Club committee announced a prize of 100 dollars to the handsomest young lady in Ohio. Her picture will adorn Centennial buttons and advertising. Judges will be men living outside Ohio to determine merits and beauty.
Henry West, a Yorkville butcher, was gored in the stomach by a bull and fatally hurt. His twelve year old daughter was struck by moving mowing machine knives. both legs were almost severed but she is expected to recover.
Milwaukee June 27 Henry C Payne declared untrue the report that he was weighing an offer to chair the Republican National Committee. He stated he is not considering the position.
Colonel Lee of the British Military Attache office investigated a New York dispatch claiming American firms sold arms to the Boers. The London embassy says no Transvaal communications were received and the report is dismissed as nonsense. He found no evidence of shipments and noted the British government had not acted on the matter.
In Lafayette Indiana the receivership of Moses Fowler Chase is to continue and the appeal from Judge Taylor is dropped. Lafayette Loan and Trust Company takes control of Chase's property including grain and rents in Benton County. The sanity trial is set for July 5 and expected to conclude within days.
William Goebel, a Kenton County power broker and state senator, is nominated by Kentucky Democrats for governor. The 38 year old lawyer rose from local boss influence to statewide political prominence through the Goebel election bill and leadership of Blackburn forces in the Senate.
In Paris the Chamber of Deputies defeated Deroulede's bid to replace a parliamentary with a popular republic. Waldeck-Rousseau opposed urgency, session suspended after tumult, and the motion failed 397 to 70. Two deputies Berteaux and Millevoye plan a sword duel tomorrow.
In Saragossa on June 26 27 rioters attacked, many injured and seventeen seriously wounded. Troops fired on crowds in Plaza de la Constitucion killing one and wounding two. Martial law imposed in Valencia with fighting at Granada and anti budget protests in Burgos Toledo and Leon. Shops closed amid riots.
Benjamin Lang aged 84 killed his wife Clara E Lang 56 at 98 Waltham Street South End. A servant Delia Hannon found the scene with a crushed skull and an ax nearby. Lang fled to a roof but was captured. he is deemed insane and to be sent to State Hospital.
In Brest France the French cruiser Sfax remains delayed since June 10 with Captain Alfred Dreyfus aboard fueling rumors of a looming transfer. A lighthouse relief steamer’s departure today fuels speculation it will escort the prisoner to meet the Sfax. Authorities refuse to comment as crowds gather for news.
The cruiser Chicago sailed from Tamatave Madagascar for Delagoa Bay but will remain near the area to safeguard American interests in the Transvaal. American residents and capital in mining operations there are significant.
The German delegates to the Peace Conference have been instructed to accept the principle of a permanent tribunal of arbitration as outlined in Anglo American plans. For the next few days the Special Drafting Committee will be the main focus as they prepare a record of work done. The discussion of a permanent Arbitration Board and Germanys relation thereto is set for Monday at The Hague.
George Stoddard of Wyoming will be appointed Superintendent of the Census for the First Census District which includes the First and Second Congressional Districts. The recommendation signed by Congressmen Shattuc and Bramwell was received by Director Merriam today.

Socialists accused crown officers of taking notes, protests rose into tumult, and the sitting was suspended. Fur niment led the Socialists in singing snippets of The Marseillaise and shouting Vive la Republique.
The steamer Kaiser Friedrich of the North German Lloyd Company is rejected for not meeting contract terms. It will be returned to the builders upon arrival at Bremen from New York, having sailed June 20 from that port.
Chicago men apply to the Federal Government for charters to Open the National Bank of Manila and the First National Bank of Manila. Applicants include J L Fulton E R Bliss J H Strong J L Ray and A L Dewar. Capital planned at 200000 with potential rise. They may visit the Philippines to assess prospects. Government action on the applications had not yet occurred.
The Belgian steamer Bruxellesville arriving from African ports reports that at noon yesterday she sighted a French cruiser believed to be the Sfax with Dreyfus aboard, heading toward Brest, while in Plymouth England on June 27.
Paris dispatch reports the Sfax sailed past Fayal in the Azores on June 27 without stopping to coal, continuing its voyage.
United States Ambassador Choate met with the Marquis of Salisbury at the Foreign Office in London to discuss Canada's Friday objection to the proposed modus vivendi in the Alaska boundary dispute.
At Brookside near Birmingham Alabama a race clash erupts as whites and blacks exchange gunfire after a black man named John Shepherd is sought for an assault. Edward Ellis Jim Dill and John Adams are killed with George Thomas fatally wounded. Sheriff O Brien cannot restore order. The Sons of Africa, a secret group, defend Shepherd.
The United States collier Abarenda arrived in Valparaiso Chile after sailing from Old Point Virginia on April 30. She carries 2 400 tons of coal for the Pago Pago coaling station and material for a permanent wharf and coal sheds at the site.
An order has arrived at the Chatham dockyard for the fleet to mobilize July 11. It is believed this move prepares for the annual navy maneuvers with battleships and thirty two cruisers to participate.

A mob seized Lapel nine miles west of Anderson for three hours in a bid to stop union organizing at Wilcox and Lapel flint glass factories. They ransacked the hotel as State Organizer James Morrigan spoke. shots were fired at the front, no one hit. Owners looted shops in support of the unions. Sheriff Moore and deputies moved in, arrests made but unrest continued.
Senator Thurston of Nebraska declared he is not a vice presidential candidate and will retire from the Senate at the end of his term. He said he would resign immediately if a Republican successor could fill his seat and affirmed he has no ambition for another public office.
The trustees of Amherst College announced the election of Prof. George Harris of Andover as president of the college in Amherst Massachusetts on June 27.

Washington June 27 official denial refutes reports that Senor Segrario Spanish Consul General in Havana will serve as Spanish Charge dAffaires in Washington during the minister’s absence this summer. No chargé d’affaires will be present. business will be conducted by mail with the State Department and if direct representation is needed Secretary Riano will be established as Charge.
General Otis predicts the arrival of about 60,000 volunteers to the islands by October as part of the military push. He outlines the effort to mobilize forces and supply lines for anticipated operations in the archipelago.
