Nelson Morris granted the increase and many strikers returned. A beating occurred and fights broke out at Armour. Libby firm says July 1 raise will be granted.
C H Burch of Middlesboro was sentenced in Tazewell to be hanged on August 1 for the killing of Deputy Sheriff Nathaniel Cloud of Claiborne County Tennessee. Accomplice Ben Johnson received twenty years. Burch reportedly laughed upon hearing his sentence. The killings stemmed from a dispute over money.
Archbishop Ireland predicts England will convert to Roman Catholicism, focusing on educated classes. He notes stronger Catholic hold since before the Reformation, with weekly new converts, while acknowledging a slow but rising wave across Great Britain and America.
Frederick Brooks a 21 year old well known local youth shot himself in the presence of his sweetheart Mrs Carrie Cade. The bullet lodged in his left lung and he died after lingering until evening. Brooks declared I will leave you with a broken heart then fired. His father and Dr Hart pronounced the wound fatal. Mrs Cade recently divorced and denies quarrel with Brooks.
Norwalk Ohio June jury clears John Monteith of Plymouth of shooting J. S. Channing five times. Court records show shooting occurred but verdict rests on insanity plea. Both residents of Plymouth.
In a telegram to the Board of Regents Chancellor McLean of Nebraska University accepted the presidency of Iowa University this afternoon. The salary is six thousand dollars.
