In Detroit dispatch June 23 1900s doctors testified about Frederick S Chase father of Moses Fowler Chase and others charged with abduction. Dr Niles described Chase as imag inative incoherent and paranoid noting fears discomforts and delusions during his stay at Oak Grove Sanitarium. The hearing was continued as lawyers argued for or against extradition papers.
Testimony portrays Moses Chase as insane at the time of departure from the Flint sanitarium while other doctors contend he was sane and competent. Attendant John J. General Axline reports the Ohio National Guard now has thirty seven companies with rifles sixty per company. Naval troops receive sixty man rifles per company and Gatling guns in light infantry units. Sixteen infantry companies are newly armed, while the Sixteenth Infantry has been mustered out and not ready for equipment.
In Indianapolis on June 23 Buell Kelleher seven years old rescued his nine year old sister Goldie after a man pushed her into Fall Creek. He swam to keep her afloat until a laborer could help. The assailant fled and has not been captured.
Paris dispatch reports the June 23 cabinet take, with Waldeck Rousseau's interview and possible resignation. Meline leads a faction planning a united front against the government, while radical Socialists clash over General Gallifet joining the cabinet. The Dreyfus affair looms as Parliament may prorogue soon.
Hartford City Indiana June 23 five blowers at the Hartford City Flint Glass Company were discharged after joining the Flint Glass Workers Union. Union organizer 8 C Stanliffe of Elwood says 80 percent of the glassware is already made by union workers and plans to unionize all nonunion plants in Indiana.
Geo H Holden reports a Manila talk with Admiral Dewey who urged Americans to stay in the Philippines for the future. Dewey endorsed extending citizenship to the sixty Chinese boys who fought at Manila Bay, telling Holden to press the Foreign Relations Committee to pass such a law.
Albany June 23 A conference among Attorney General Davies former Agriculture Commissioner Schraub and Commissioner Weituing outlined steps to restart suits against Armour & Co to recover about 1 500 000 in penalties for selling oleomargarin in New York State. The cases were suspended two years ago after Armour agreed to pay 20 000 and halt imitation butter sales. Governor Roosevelt urged full payment or none, prompting the current action.
Field O June 23 Aff airs of Section 707 of the Endowment Bank Knights of Pythias are in trouble after a Chicago HQ note says all members were suspended for nonpayment of dues since last November. Receipts show dues paid to Treasurer Robert T. Bailey who vanished after promising an accounting. About $700 is involved as officials seek to settle the affair at a meeting tomorrow night.
The funeral for Lieutenant Philip Van Horne Lansdale who died at Samoa was held today at St. Luke's Church with Bishop Moreland delivering the sermon. The ceremony drew navy and army members. flags flew at half mast along the waterfront as the body was escorted from the cruiser Philadelphia and interred at Cypress Lawn Cemetery.
