In response to questions Ickes called the suggested minimum wage levels for public works labor narrow and ill advised. He argued that high wages reflect prosperity and that restoring purchasing power must begin somewhere as delegations from southern and midwestern states report farmers and local businessmen worry the wages will outpace their own pay.
