Montana history recalls Nez Perce Big Hole battle

The Big Hole clash in 1877 saw army and civilian volunteers led by Col. John Gibbon engage Nez Perce warriors. Joe Blodget guided the march and helped surprise the camp. Casualties totaled 29 soldiers and civilians, 40 wounded, with 989 Nez Perces dead.
