Montana wheat crop down by half in 1956 from last year
Montana's 1956 winter wheat crop is estimated at 26,960,000 bushels, under half of last year's 54,756,000. Unfavorable fall weather and a cool dry winter blamed. Overall state crop outlook remains favorable with rains and warmer weather aiding germination. Soil moisture varies by region. Montana hatcheries produced 585,000 chicks in April, 1 percent above last year. State College authorized to pay 2,000 for land near Polson for use as an expert.
